Book Description

June 1, 1999
Parental divorce threatens a child's most basic sense of trust and security, and can have long-term effects on a child's relationships with themselves and others. But how do you tell your child that you are separating? And how can you reassure them that it isn't their fault, and that both parents still love them? Darlene Weyburne provides extensive advice about all details involved like visiting schedules, parenting rules and possible future problems.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

These two new volumes address the practical and emotional issues of divorce. In The Divorce Book, two psychologists, a lawyer, and a relationships expert successfully tackle subjects such as the emotional stages of divorce, the legal issues, the effects of divorce on children, single parenting, sexuality, and remarriage. This is a practical book, with tips on how to set up a budget, find a job, and negotiate parenting agreements. It contains a good range of commonsense advice from various experts but might have benefited from an index for those looking for specific topics. Overall, though, this is a useful, well-formatted book for readers maneuvering a difficult process. Using a workbook format, therapist/ social worker Weyburne offers practical advice on making divorce easier for children. Each chapter includes exercises for dealing with various situations, from the family meeting to tell the kids about the divorce to exercises for building self-esteem. This is particularly effective in reminding parents not to put kids in the middle, not to criticize the other parent in front of the kids, and how to prepare kids for someone new in your life. At a time when most parents are understandably focused on their own feelings, this book will help them do the right thing for their children. Sample charts for visitation schedules and chore assignments are included. Once again, an index is lacking, but this is still another helpful title by an expert in the field. 5.0 out of 5 stars more than just a book for divorcing parents with children, August 6, 2000

This review is from: What to Tell the Kids about Your Divorce (Paperback)
I had the adavantage of having ms. Weyburne as my thrapist, so i had the opportunity to know about this book and was very much interested in reading her views on this subject. I was excited because it was exactly what my sister needed at this time. I first bought it for her because she was going through a divorce and was having a hard time dealing with her kids on this subject, but then i noticed in some later chapters, things that seemed to help me understand better my own divorce (though no children were involved). I bought a second copy for myself and gained valuable knowledge about divorce, with or without chilren. I recognized many situations that a person goes through during and after a divorce and was able to use that knowledge to help me get past a few walls I had built around myself. This started with the chapter on taking care of yourself and went through confronting and coping with your feelings, mourning the loss and changing negative thinking habits. Ms. Weyburne is very knowledgable on this subject and used her education and twenty years of experience to write a book that can help parents, going through divorce with children, and also adults that have or are going through a divorce with no children. I was lucky enough to know about the book because she was my therapist, so i am writing this to let others without the same opportunity, to hear about a well written and very insightful book. Thank you Darlene.
