Book Description

In this booklet, Dr. R. C. Sproul carefully and clearly explains that the church is a body of people saved by Jesus Christ and regenerated by the Holy Spirit who live to glorify and enjoy God. Beginning with the ancient Nicene Creed, which affirms that the church is “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic,” Dr. Sproul provides accessible teaching on one of the most misunderstood of all Christian doctrines.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT PRIMER ON WHAT THE CHURCH IS ALL ABOUT November 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
R.C. Sproul examines what the Church isn't, and what it is. In breaking down four key words from the Council of Nicea about what the Church is, Sproul articulates what it means that the church is (1) one, (2) holy, (3) catholic [i.e., universal], and (4) apostolic. Some of the issues addressed in this helpful book are: Why are there so many denominations? What are the essential truths that unite all Christians? What is Liberalism? Why do doctrines divide and unite? What's an Evangelical? What does it mean for the church to be holy? What is the foundation of the church? What does it mean to be "in Christ"? What is the Gospel? What are the Sacraments? and Why should the church practice discipline?

Sproul covers a lot of ground in this short book. It is full of historical and theological insights, wisdom, and biblically based. I would recommend this book especially for new Christians and as a cogent argument for so-called "Christians" who are not a part of a visible local church. It will help you appreciate what unites Christians throughout history, today, and forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good Reformed intro to Ecclesiology December 16, 2013
As a young theologian I found that ecclesiology was something that I felt was missing in my experience of Protestantism. As I began to study more, I found this to be more and more the case. Although Protestants could say that they understood that the Church wasn’t simply a building they met in, or a localized group of Christians, I found that often they lived as though it were. Today I’ll be reviewing What is the Church? by R.C. Sproul, an entry in the Crucial Questions series.

This book is a short read, and like others in the CQ series, is intended to give a basic answer to a question Christians face. Like the others, this book represents a Reformed position on catholic Christianity, and as such the views may not go over with more independent positions (Anabaptists, Baptists, and Non-Denominational types). However, I think this entry is a valuable tool to begin to develop a basic framework.

Taking its structure from the Nicene formulation, following in the Augustinian tradition, it identifies that the characteristics of the Church are One, Holy, Apostolic and catholic. Sproul then proceeds throughout the remainder of the book to explain each of those attributes.

Overall, I like the CQ series, and have reviewed several of them on this blog. I did find, however, that this one left me a bit unsatisfied. It seemed at times to give surface level questions, which were not on the same level of depth as the others in the series. Additionally, the treatment of the properties of One, Apostolic, and catholic were rather weak.

5.0 out of 5 stars The real deal November 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love this whole series and pretty much anything Mr. Sproul writes. He is easy to understand, and my faith has been greaty impacted by the knowledge that his writting imparts. He quotes a lot of scripture, and looks at all different view points to give you the choice to form your own beliefs. He is awesome at teaching the core principals and what I like to call the meat and potatoes of Christianity. I felt he taught me more about what it mean to be Catholic than I learn from Catholics! Reading these books has made me hungry for more information, and also has made me feel like God is calling his people back to Him.

Sproul offers a helpful overview of the Nicene creed where the church is defined as "one, holy, catholic, and apostolic." He explains briefly how unity can sometimes be misinformed. Holiness is a picture of how the people of God have been set apart, called out by God himself as the ekklesia. The church is catholic not in the Roman Catholic sense, but in the universal sense. Lastly the church is apostolic in that it proclaims the apostolic Gospel.

5.0 out of 5 stars What is The Church?: 17 (Crucial Questions Series) March 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one of 17 in this series. I have all 17 paperback copies and also have them on my Kindle Fire (e-books). These little books were recommended to me by a number of people in my Women's Bible Study and several men in my Co-Ed Bible Study Group. I love learning more about Christ and what he has done for us and still does for us and these books help me understand our Lord more than I even realized. They are simply written so everyone can understand and each book covers a different area of learning. I recommend them to every person.
