More About the Author

Brian James Freeman sold his first short story when he was fourteen years old and his first novel when he was twenty-four. His short stories, essays, novellas, and novels have been published by Warner Books, Leisure, Cemetery Dance, Borderlands Press, Book-of-the-Month Club, and many others.

His newest book-length work of fiction is The Painted Darkness, which took the Internet by storm during the summer of 2010 and will be published in hardcover in December 2010 by Cemetery Dance Publications. The Painted Darkness was also offered as the "Free eBook of the Month" by WOWIO.com in October 2010, and within two weeks it became the most downloaded title in the program's history.

Brian's short fiction has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies since 1994 including From the Borderlands (Warner Books), Borderlands 5 (Borderlands Press), Corpse Blossoms (Creeping Hemlock Press), and all six volumes of the acclaimed Shivers anthology series (Cemetery Dance Publications).

Brian is currently the managing editor of Cemetery Dance magazine, where his column "The Final Question" appears. "What They Left Behind: A Short Story" is a great starting point for soon-to-be fans of Brian James Freeman's works. Overall, I recommend buying Brian James Freeman's collection called "Seven Stories" instead (which includes this story and 6 great others).

This story is atmospheric and creepy horror at a very enthralling level. It even sent a chill down my back as I read it. Like most of Mr. Freeman's works, you will be wanting more. Which is, again, why I recommend buying his "Seven Stories" collection.

On the latest Kindle, the story itself is about 43 page clicks long at my settings (4th largest font size, regular typeface, large line spacing, default words per line.

Quiet and engrossing horror fiction is a favorite of mine. So, I always look forward to a good story from this author. I first ran across this story in Richard Chizmar's "Shivers IV" anthology (from Cemetery Dance Publications and written without his middle name at that time, "Brian Freeman"), and I loved it then. This second time around, it was still a treat to be savored.

This book was only about eight pages long...should have been billed as a short (very short) story. Imagery was good and I wanted there to be more!! I felt like I was left behind when it just ended!!! I sure thought I bought a book and not a magazine story...
