A waste of your time and money,
By
This review is from: What They Want: A Novel (Hardcover)
Terrance Mitchell is a successful male model based out of Atlanta, GA. His body, sex appeal, and bedroom skills have more women after him than he knows what to do with. Ever the player, Terrance makes a vow to himself never to get locked down by one woman after losing an old girlfriend when he refused to submit to her wishes for commitment. Accordingly, he's with a different woman every day of the week and flies around the country flaunting his conquests.
Terrance is a pretentious, self-involved player with no concern for anyone but himself. The very second you think he might start to care about someone, he turns around and acts like a selfish, stubborn child. For a man who is supposed to be 33 years old and successful, he has all the maturity of a sixteen year old high school student. It was all I could do not the throw the book across the room when he sleeps with seven different women over the course of five days, and sometimes without using a condom. Tyree attempts to use the numerous sex scenes--and there's one about every ten pages or so--to make up for his lack of plot, but fails miserably. This book was nearly unreadable, but I kept going because I assumed there had to be some saving graces. I was wrong. Tyree's thoughts jumble together and the story is too convoluted for you to understand what kind of point he's trying to make--if there is any at all. There is no lesson to be learned from this story and the way Tyree ties up the loose ends is too easy and downright unbelievable. I'd suggest you look to African-American authors who actually have something to say and the technique to say it well, like Eric Jerome Dickey or E. Lynn Harris, and leave this one to the people who think that hip hop videos actually depict the lifestyle of a typical African-American.

Don't Really Want It,
By Lady Louise (Connecticut) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What They Want: A Novel (Hardcover)
Over the years I've tried to read a few of Omar Tyree's books but unfortunately I was only able to read one or two chapters because I simply lost interest. I recently picked up his latest novel, or rather checked it out from one of the local branch libraries, and this time I read the book all the way through. "What They Want" is a story about a womanizing male model name Terrance who has a series of women, 13 in total. Some of them are at his beck & call, while others whished to be more than a mere booty call. Let me just say that only a man could have written this book, a character who does as he pleases with no real consequences, women vying for his time only to find themselves hurt and jilted in the end. I found this book to be a disappointing read, there were some moments I thought the book was going to pick up with the likes of Andrea, a former girlfriend turned lesbian with her lover Brazil. Tashay, an up n coming 19yr old model with her ghetto best friend Tan. There's Rachel, a woman who he met in a hotel lobby after leaving Judy, a former flame who decides to take a vow of celibacy. Then there was the likes of Nicole, a woman who serviced him in the car while driving on the freeway. All had interesting storylines but no sooner does the drama unfold, Tyree quickly wraps it up and moves on to the next chapter. To add insult to injury he pretty much does the same thing in the end of the book by going out in an epilogue, but then again perhaps he did us all a favor.

This book is clearly a "Man's Fantasy Novel.",

I wasn't quite feeling this book. The main character was way too full of himself to give any real depth to the issues he is meant to deal with, but his story will be in demand at any rate. The cover of this book was more appealing to me then the story itself.
Terrance Mitchell is a type of person that like to think with his head instead of the other way around. Being that this story is about a successful 30ish model whom really loves his job and stays in exotic locales only long enough to attend a photo shoot and nail a number of locals. Annoyingly, most of them seem to want him to commit, but Terrance, who thinks commitment are non-beneficial tends to brush it off and accelerate more on "freaky" sex with various women. Beside his story there a lot of drama regarding the sub-stories in this book first dealing with Terrance's unwed sister, and then one on Terrance former male model; and then a proposition offer to him from one of his modeling agency execs. Eventually, this lifestyle and positions get too busy (or kinky) for him and contemplates on settling down with one woman who might not be so bad after all as long she's like what he likes. And while Terrance considers changing his ways an unexpected phone call from a past lover seem to hit him across the head and veered him towards another direction. This book has enough sex scenes to keep you awake but Terrance rambling conversation might make you fall asleep. Tyree's 14th book seems to try to do a lot in this book and all the eroticism he adds in this story only leads to a mess. I don't know what he's attentions are but it seems to me he's heading more towards the popular author Zane, and if he is, he clearly needs to shape up on that area before he decides to attempt on another book.

Entertaining but no substance,
By Faith Diva "Kiki" (Baltimore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What They Want: A Novel (Hardcover)
As many other reviewers have mentioned, I too have tried to read Tyree and never get past the first couple of chapters. With the exception of A Do Right Man and Leslie, Tyree bores me. However, I must admit I read this new one from cover to cover in one day. It definitely holds the reader - but only because the reader is hoping something is going to change this man with a quickness before one of the female characters hurts him! It is basically a story about a immature model and his sex-capades. The end comes a little too neatly to be believed. It is somewhat reminiscent of A Do Right Man, but the main character is not a good man, but quite selfish and nearly sex-addicted. You just know he is about to get caught and beat up by SOMEONE, but no such satisfication.
It may do well because men WANT to live like the main character and will find it erotic (sex scenes are explicit). But I'm glad I didn't buy it myself (checked it out from the library). I don't recommend adding it to your collection.

Glad I didn't buy it...,
This review is from: What They Want: A Novel (Hardcover)
I got lucky and found this book in my library. After reading a couple of chapters, I took it back and told them to get their money back, burn the book, and slap the person for ordering it. I simply could not get into this book.

This review is from: What They Want: A Novel (Hardcover)
I put this book down on page 50 and came to Amazon.com to read the reviews. Doesn't matter though I can't read this anymore. I'm so disappointed, all I can say is you can't judge a book by its cover!

What They Want? How about a decent book by Omar,

This review is from: What They Want: A Novel (Hardcover)
This will be the LAST Omar Tyree book I buy. They have gotten WORST since Fly Girl.
All this guy (Terrance) in the story is a oversexed 33 year old. He can't keep a girl because his crotch gets him in trouble all the time. This guy gives Dre (How to Be A Player) a run for his money. At least Dre had some redeeming qualities.

Ashamed to be a black man,
By
This review is from: What They Want: A Novel (Hardcover)
As a black man and as a man period I was very displeased with Mr. Tyree's character one Mr. Terrance Mitchell. When I read the back flap of this book it clearly states "He realized that women had a purpose for him." I guess that purpose was to fulfill every selfish desire he had. He only realized the error of his ways the last 20 pages or so of the book that contained over 400. The ending was so unrealistic. He slept around the whole book and at the very end all of a sudden he's Cliff Huxtable. I would've love to see Michelle's character exposed more. It wasn't enough about her to connect with her. This man used and abused every woman in this book including his own mother, and that's definitely isn't like a black man. I hope that I never ever meet anyone as selfish as Terrance, he played with people's emotions and had no regard for it. His antics were so bad that it changed the scope of others lives forever. Overall all it was not a good read. It was just a book of ongoing sex. This was my first Omar Tyree novel and my last.

Good Read,

This review is from: What They Want: A Novel (Paperback)
I was disappointed to read the other reviews but everyone has their own opinion. I feel that this book was very up to date with the current dating world. I am a successful single 24 year old woman living in the Atlanta area (like the character Terence) and that is just the way things are now. The character reminded me of a lot of guys I have met and tried to avoid. If you are not in the dating world then you won't understand this book. I feel this is a great book for intelligent young single black woman who want to know how guys think about you from your first impressions to the way you carry yourself and the things you say. Not saying that all men are the same but they are all very similiar especially the way they feel about women. It gave me alot of tips about what to say and do around a successful single black man. Some people are a little too uptight but what did you expect from a book from Omar Tyree? You might learn a few tricks to use with your partner to tell you the truth.

Unrealistic Storyline,
By
This review is from: What They Want: A Novel (Hardcover)
The author should have just written erotic fiction, because this is the entire plot of the book: how many women he could bed. The author expects us to believe that this whoremonger of a man could sleep his way through countless women, sometimes 5 women in 3 days, and, poof! just settle down upon reconnecting with the mother of his child. I'm really glad this is a work of fiction, because, Omar, this doesn't happen in real life. Once a dog, always a dog. He didn't even develop his character to the point that he was monogamous to one woman for any length of time before he decided the character would suddenly give up all the cha cha he was getting before settling down. Totally unrealistic.
