5.0 out of 5 stars I Will Listen December 31, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Zorn's writing for strings is very special. Spectacular in fact. His set of string quartets are some of the most important new contributions to the literature, standing in the lineage of Schoenberg, Bartok, Carter, Ligeti and Xenakis. In his notes to this CD he says how daunting it was to write a violin concerto. Well he took the challenge very seriously and came up with one of his most powerful classical works, and a major concerto for the 21st century. The colors of the orchestra are beautifully utilized, with special mention to the 3 percussionists who really shine. "Quicksilver" changes really keep you transfixed. There is something exciting happening at every single second of this piece. The haunting sound of the wind machines after a powerful climactic tutti is one of those special moments that give me goose bumps every time I hear it. Stephanie Nussbaum is incredible in this recording and attacks the challenging and difficult solo part with passion and real feeling. The whole orchestra is flawless, it is hard to believe it is a live performance. But then again it is Tanglewood, and Ryan McAdams.

The two other pieces present completely different sound worlds, both referencing British occultist Aleister Crowley. The solo piano piece is one of the strangest pieces Zorn has ever created (that says a LOT), and hypnotizes you with moody atmospheric sounds and ostinati, and then shakes you with intense explosions of clusters. It is a whole new thing and I have ever heard anything quite like it. Because it is so wild and Drury plays with such incredible spontaneity you may think that there is improvisation here, but I spoke with Steve Drury after a live concert and looked at the score.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sort of Retro-Jazz July 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Excellent, free flowing only loosely structured acoustic jazz in the style of the Circle quartet of Corea, Altschul et al. from the early 1970s. For repeated listening!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea December 12, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I like most of John Zorn 's music and try to listen to every new release, so naturally when I saw the ***** review on this page, it made me curious.
Normally I wouldn't write about a musical genre that I can't appreciate, but I decided to do this so that others would know what this CD is about before they buy it.
Released on the Tzadik label this is an avant-garde/contemporary music CD, and not a jazz CD.And because I don't understand much about this music, these are the notes from Tzadik:
"Composed in 1999 at the turning of the millennium, Contes de Fées is one of Zorn's classical masterworks. A powerful violin concerto with a virtuosic and lyrical solo part and dramatic, colorful orchestral accompaniment, it receives its best performance to date by the Tanglewood Orchestra under the baton of Ryan McAdams and features the remarkable soloist Stephanie Nussbaum. Also included are two intense pieces of Crowleana, the bizarre and expansive solo piano piece . ? . and the whirlwind numerological miniature for three celli dedicated to the legendary new music virtuoso Fred Sherry 777, which maestro Charles Wuorinen considers one of Zorn's most remarkable works".
So if you're into this kind of music give it a try.
