It's about time--to read to the kids,
By Armchair Interviews (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What Time Is It, Mr. Crocodile? (Hardcover)
Mr. Crocodile has carefully planned out his day. He even wrote out a schedule, but everything goes awry when the mischievous monkeys arrive. Everywhere he goes, the monkeys follow, and all Mr. Crocodile wants is to rid himself of the annoying creatures. That is, until he has a change of heart, decides to make friends and enjoy all their antics.
What Time is it, Mr. Crocodile? is the perfect volume to introduce young children to the concept of time. Each spread begins with the line "What Time is it, Mr. Crocodile?" (a line children will quickly begin shouting for you), and the artwork features a large, clear image of the clock with the time corresponding to Mr. Crocodile's schedule. Children will delight in the impish monkeys and the trouble they find, while adults will enjoy the pacing on the answers and will quickly adopt a sing-songy tone: "Time to capture my meal as I sit at the wheel of my marvelous monkey-collecting mobile." Doug Cushman has hidden treats for adults in his illustrations; a copy of "Newton and the Law of Gravity" being dropped on the crocodile's head, and images which conjure memories of the rhyme "Five little monkeys bouncing on the bed, one fell off and bumped his head." The most delightful aspect of What Time is it, Mr. Crocodile is Cushman's illustrations. His vivid images bring the impish monkeys and grumpy crocodile to life and their vitality almost leaps off the page. Armchair Interviews says: Don't be surprised if your little ones respond by wiggling and bouncing along with the monkeys.

Before bed Mr. Crocodile makes his to do list. The list includes things like swim, visit the library, and go to town. The list also includes catch those monkeys, cook those monkeys, and EAT those monkeys! All day long the monkeys tease Mr. Crocodile, not knowing that he has had enough and plans to eat them! Will they be clever enough to escape Mr. Crocodile?

I am not sure what it is about this book but my 3-year old daughter loves it so much that she laughs hysterically when I read it to her! We picked it out at the library and as an adult, I didn't really like it that much but my daughter found the rhymes, and the quirky monkeys and crocodile to be adorable! For weeks she asked us "What time is it Mr. Crocodile?" when we were ready to go places, so we knew we had to buy this one. Love to hear my child laugh like that during a story, so it is a winner!

The best laid plans of mice and crocs.....,

This review is from: What Time Is It, Mr. Crocodile? (Paperback)
Mr Crocodile has his dayplanner filled, hour by hour. After a day of play in the sun, he plans to catch, cook, and dine on monkeys. But somehow, his plans go awry, and his carefully outlined day does not end up the way he expected that it would. Doug Cushman splashes the pages with bold, super-saturated acrylic colors. Picture book for ages 3-7.

My grandsons love this book...we checked it at the library but they wanted to keep it so I ordered it for them. The older one likes the clock on each page as he is learning ot tell time and the younger one likes the story because of the rhyming way it is read...great book.

This book is a great book to teach o'clock of time. Students loved listening to the book and reviewing the book with a clock as an introduction to time. I highly recommend the book.

Great book - personality, time-telling, character, voice.,
By There is a rhythm and flow to the words that my 4 year old loves. He is already reading, and as he reads the story to me I hear the echo of my inflections and pace. The "back and forth" between the monkeys and Mr. Crocodile is delightful and intriguing. The attention to detail in the art is wonderful - the book about gravity falling on the crocodile's head, the "sand crocodile," etc. Even my husband, who hates kids' books, didn't mind this one because he was busy looking at the details of the pages with the kids. I initially picked this book up at the library because my son loves clocks. He was not disappointed in this book - a clock on every page! And, again, the details were great - we got to talk about different kinds of clocks, including sundials, and different styles of lettering, including Roman numerals. My 2 year old also loves this book. Mostly because she IS a monkey . . . and I think the cute critters in this book give her ideas. We are putting this book on our shelves to come back to again and again. |
