Timeless.,
By The Groove (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What Time Is It (Audio CD)
The Time's 1982 followup to its debut proved that they weren't a faceless protege band of puppets with Prince pulling the strings. Each of the members is individually talented, including guitarist Jesse Johnson, future hitmakers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and the flamboyant lead singer Morris Day. "What Time Is It?" is Minneapolis funk at its best, and it holds up amazingly well after more than two decades. At the heart of this six-track LP are two note-perfect jams: the infectious groove of "777-9311" and "Gigolos Get Lonely Too." The former song is straight-up flawless thanks to its tight instrumentation featuring precise drumming and a bassline to die for, and the latter is a silky-smooth ballad about a playa who wants to leave behind his wild ways and settle down. That's not to say the rest of "What Time Is It" isn't worth checking out. The opening track "Wild and Loose" and the funny "The Walk" are other notable highlights. While they don't make fine records like this anymore, "What Time Is It"'s influence can't be denied. A record you shouldn't miss.

The Essential album by the Time!,
By Justin Ostoforoff (Nanaimo, B.C CANADA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What Time Is It (Audio CD)
Now that I have all 4 Time albums I could recognize this one as their ultimate best. The best song on this album and in general for the Time is definitely "777-9311". In a recent interview with Bass Player Magazine, The Artist was asked which of his many bass lines that he's created was his favourite, he said "777-9311" was and that nobody could play it like him. That song just gets locked in your head because it's very catchy and has the neatest arrangement. "Giggalos Get Lonely Too" is an outstaning ballad, while "Wild and Loose" is an excellent heavy funky tune. The venture briefly into New Wave on "Onedayi'mgonnabesomebody" then blast right into the "The Walk" with Vanity 6 on backgrounds. Just an excellent album with that trademark "Minneapolis Sound" written all over it. Get it Now!

This review is from: What Time Is It (Audio CD)
...well, at least i thought i was. i was a sophomore in high school and i had the look down: the baggy pants, the tie, the shoes...forgive me, tho, but i just couldnt get with brother's bouffant (jerome was my man). this was one of the best albums in my collection and i wore it out! along with my dazz band, gap band, run-dmc and mantronix albums! life was good...i think i'ma throw me a house party and play all'a that stuff again!...i almost forgot, this is a review aint it? well, hell yeah the music is good! they was part of prince's click, right?! come on now. jimmy jam...jesse johnson...even alexander o'neal (i had read somewhere that o'neal had actually been the front man for the group when it was called flyte tyme, but that prince prefered morris day...if anyone knows for sure, let me know, please). if you have any ohio players or "guitar" watson or zapp band in your collection and you don't have any time...then shame on you, fa'real!

Chilli Sauce!!!,

Ok...we all know that Prince, the genius that he is ,is responsible for all the music , backup vocals, instruments etc...but if we can look beyond that...this is just one big sexy party album. I agree that "Gigolos Get Lonely Too" is just begging to be re-made!!! (i think J.T. would be cool wit it) 777-9311 show cased just how Cool Morris Day was. It may have been Prince Behind the scenes but Morris was the only choice to make for the front man 4 the Time. This era in music did more than influence what we listened to but also how we dressed and talked! it was cool...Yayyess!!! Memories of sliding sideways in Stacey Adams at the Prom Yelling "Chilli Sauce"

Live On...in Time!,
By Honey (Heaven) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What Time Is It (Audio CD)
This is my favorite CD by The Time. It's at the top of my funk-o-meter! The party kicks off with the tantalizing, high-stepping, sweat-dripping rhthym of "Wild and Loose." A big time dance tune back in the day!
Then it moves right into the fired-up intro to 777-9311! Never has a phone number been so properly laid on wax! The serious funky, guitar licks are enough to make you jump out of your seat and jam! Ahhh but there's more stellar cuts on this sophomore set! Gigolos Get Lonely too, and another dynamite dance/funk tune...The Walk! Brings back mega-club memories! Morris and his pretty self... Jesse and his guitar licks! Jerome the Valet, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis..Monte..yanno! These guys did it up right and when they were on..not many could touch them. They bought funk into the 80's..righteously! As much as I love Prince, he never got as funky as these fellas!

The Ultimate Minneapolis Sound Album,
By Daniel G. Moir (Eden Prairie, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What Time Is It (Audio CD)
Now, I will admit to be heavily biased here, The Time's keyboard player, Monte Moir, is my cousin, so I have always really dug this record. However, if there is one Time record to own, it is this one. It is just pure funky fun from start to finish. Great songs and great playing throughout by everyone. For those of us who lived in Minneapolis during the early 80's, this record seems to really represent what it sounded like. A very exciting time musically to be sure. You cannot go wrong with this record!

Hurry Up Grace!,
By A Customer
This review is from: What Time Is It (Audio CD)
This was a very fun Album in the 80's, and Still holds up extremely well to this day. You will laugh out loud at some of Morris Day's Outrageous lyrics, and at the same time appreciate a really tight band, with unique song structures. LSU's Spring Break in '83, you could Not walk along the beach in Ft. Walton/Destin without hearing The Walk, Wild & Loose or 777-9311. Has it really been 19 years? Gigolos really shows off Day's vocal range. Some excellent guitar & bass work, mixed with Synth keyboards. Nice to rememeber a time when bands actually played instruments!

Yep, this is a funky set of songs. Don't let the short running time of the cd put you off (it's not expensive!). This is easily the BEST Time album (though most of the instruments were actually played by Prince Nelson).Get it, but before you put it on-- brace yourself. You'll probably dance you a** off!!

Somebody bring me a mirror!! Morris Day and the Time are true classics. iF you happened to have been in a cave during the 80s, not only did they provude all the comedy and jokes in Purple Rain but their live sequences were some of the best. Only Morris Day could perform choreography on stage with a butler!! Dont be fooled by the number of songs on here, each one runs extra long. The Walk and Gigolos Get Lonely are among my favs.

The Time...,
By WILLIE A YOUNG II "willow" (Houston, TX.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What Time Is It (Audio CD)
I was only 12 when this was first issued, but even then I knew I was listening to something different and brilliant. When "777-9311" was the biggest thing on Black Radio ( I hate that term) in my native Houston, everybody was singing the hook, but few paid attention to the slippery arrangement, popping, rubbery bass line or Jesse Johnson's wailing guitar. This expansive, almost jazz fusion funk jam is reason enough to own this Classic LP, but everything here works, the lyrics, the skits, all the arrangements and the healthy dose of humor injected into every song. 6 tracks, all extended jams and positively no filler. This kind of music should be the rule nowadays, not the exception.Essential. |
