One of Seuss's Best!,

I LOVE this book! What could be better than a "pair of pale green pants with no one inside them" wandering around? This pair of pants scare our main character since the pants seem to lurk wherever he goes. In typical Seuss fashion, we discover at the end that the pants were just looking for a friend.
As a preschool teacher, my children LOVE this book. They beg for "the pants book." We even did a dramatic reading of this book during our summer camp--kids aged 3-12--and it easily held their attention. It is not one of his best known stories, but it becomes an easy favorite. Definitely check this one out!

This is another good Dr. Seuss book. I gave it to my great-grand-son to help prepare him for Halloween.
It was a good purchase.

It is amazing that the book shows kids this type of teaching SO thoroughly!!!
Everybody has an experience or two of scared/afraid feelings of getting to know a new thing/people in their lives. My kids are 2,3, and 5 but they SURE understand pretty well of the concept! It also glows in the dark, so it was even fun for them to see :)

Good Story - Bad Execution,

It's a great book that basically teaches the lesson of life which is as nervous as you are, someone is probably feeling the exact same way. The material in the book stands on its own and would be 5 stars if it wasn't for the gimmick. But where this book fails is in its execution. The type is not readable in the dark, and the glow in the dark elements are weakly implemented. Since the Glow In The Dark gimmick is why I purchased the book, it's a disappointment.

This review is from: What Was I Scared Of?: A Glow-in-the Dark Encounter (Classic Seuss) (Hardcover)
The cover of What Was I Scared Of? is a bit different from most of the other Dr. Seuss books I've seen, with a little Seuss-creature looking frightened, but what he's scared of isn't shown. It's set in a forest at night, with the moon high, and eventhough you wouldn't expect Dr. Seuss to go beyond his usual silly boundaries, I doubt anyone could ever guess what it is that has the character so spooked. This is the book that really started the Dr. Seuss kick my daughter's been on for the last couple of months, after we sat down and read it at the store, and it had her attention from start to finish. I love this one if only for how crazy the 'horror' is.
The main character is walking through the woods one night, when he suddenly sees a pair of glowing pants at the end of the path he's on. They start to move and walk around, and the little guy gets outta there in a split second. Some time passes, and he takes another night walk, when they show up once again. Though they haven't started talking or making any wild sounds, the pants pose some kind of threat in the character's mind and he continues to escape, going so far as to hop in a row boat to get away from them. In the end, it turns out that the pants didn't mean any harm, and were just as scared of the main character as he was of them. They become friends when all is said and done. Bizarre, isn't it? Though when you think about it, a pair of pants...glowing green and moving around on their own at night in the woods WOULD be pretty dang scary in real life, especially since there wouldn't be any nice Seuss rhymes to go along with the situation. This is a very cute book, and I love the illustrations. Dr. Seuss could always set the mood with the simplest of settings, and this book is a great example of just that. The colors never change from the basic greens, blacks and yellows, and as weird as it sounds, it's beautiful to look at. Even better is the glow in the dark feature used on the main character, pants and moon. They all glow very brightly after being exposed to light for just a few seconds and it looks cool. Once again the doctor gives us a charming book with fantastic illustrations, a good lesson to learn, and a setup that's just plain weird. While I haven't read even half of his books so far, this is one of the best ones I've read, and easily my daughter's favorite. A definite buy, though I'd recommend just buying this version on its own, as The Sneetches contains this story but no glow in the dark feature [unless there's a printing error and the ones I've checked out all didn't have it but it usually does].

Wow, what a disappointment. I assumed that glow in the dark book would have glow in the dark type, but this lame book requires the reader to turn the light on to read the text, the turn it off to see the one little part of each page that glows. Don't bother.

When my grandchildren were little this was their favorite story. We used to read it by flashlight under the covers. Every time they came to my house they asked for the "story about the pale green pants". I even had to bring it along whenever we all went on vacations together. I will be ordering this glow-in-the-dark version to read to my 2 year old great-granddaughter. Can't wait!

It's glow in the dark which is a great novelty, but cannot be read in the dark, the text is not illuminated. You do need to 'charge' the glow in the dark paint, so make sure to do so before you plan on reading it. Great story to help children understand it's ok to be scared, but they probably don't need to be. Great illustrations, as always.

My granddaughter is afraid of so many things so I purchased this book to help with this fear. She adorned it and laughed and now is taking it to school to share with other children. Thank you Dr. Suess.
