The second Fairport Convention album, originally released in 1969, is the first to feature the beautifully haunting vocals of the legendary Sandy Denny. What We Did On Our Holidays contains some of the Fairport Convention's finest moments, including Denny's own Fotheringay, Richard Thompson's Meet Me On The Ledge and their stunning take on Bob Dylan's I'll Keep It With Mine. This LP finds the Fairport Convention moving away from the California folk-rock of their debut album towards a more British approach to similar material. It is also the last full LP to feature Ian Matthews on vocals.

Now-classic early Fairport Convention album recorded in the year I was born,just as they decided Sandy Denny will bring more as vocalist and composer than previous girl who sang with them.Not that previous album was not good - it had its good points but was not really focused or special in any way.
To me this is where the magic of Fairport Convention started to happen and every single song is brilliant,my particular favourites are opener "Fotheringay" or Joni Mitchell's "Eastern rain" althougth album actually had two singles - "Meet on the Ledge" and Dylan's "I'll keep it with mine".
"She moves through the fair" deserves much more than to be mentioned here briefly,its one of the most haunting songs ever and was recorded by hundreds of people,of course Sandy Denny was just perfect to sing it since she had that particular timeless magic - everything from instrumental opener to Denny's voice is spot on,ancient and modern at the same time.
Marianne Faithfull recorded it twice,once in early 1960s as young girl and decades later as ravaged survivor,strangely effective in both versions. Its just great song alltogether.
For me,"She moves through the fair" is the centerpiece of the album and hard to resist in its music and picture,what a story.Almost like a ghost story told around the camp fire and than it keeps haunting you for the rest of your life.
