Book Description

April 25, 2006

"What does one wear to a proper seduction?"

Edwina groaned as she stared at her reflection in the tall gilded mirror. "And what now? I'm putting on the clothing simply to have it taken off."

And why would proper Lady Edwina Ross dress to seduce "London's Perfect Lover"? Because Prescott Devane, the notorious rogue, is the only one who can help the desperate lady with her scheme to catch a blackmailing fiend. Because no one else could play the role of a love-struck fiancÉ so convincingly. Because a faux engagement, secrets, the threat of scandal, and the promise of untapped passion are too tantalizing to ignore. Because, if the need arises, every woman should know what to wear to a seduction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read with a few shortcomings., May 31, 2006
This review is from: What to Wear to a Seduction (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first Sari Robbins read and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a nice storyline and the characters were well-developed and likable. I liked that Edwina wasn't physically perfect, but capable of being desired all the same.

The love scenes were few and far between and a bit tame in my opinion. It was a sweet story that made for an interesting read.

Prescott was not my type of hero. He is haunted by his past, but he is generally an amiable, likable guy. I guess I just prefer the dark, brooding, tortured hero. Just a preference. ;)

3 1/2 stars.

I thought the whole premise of this book was ridiculous. The hero is an orphan who somehow became a society gigolo. Talk about rising above your station. The heroine manages to somehow talk him into a fake engagement, in order to relieve her of the pressures of fighting off suitors, thereby freeing up enough time so that she can hunt down a blackmailer.

I'd call that regency suspense taken to an extreme level of silliness.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent Regency romance, April 25, 2006
This review is from: What to Wear to a Seduction (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1811 London, Prescott Devane has vowed to never be an escort again after overhearing the Ton talk about him with disdain. As he recovers from injuring his hands rescuing a little girl who was on fire at the orphanage where he was raised, he is also mentally shook up because of the murder of his mentor Headmaster Dunn and his best friend at the orphanage who married someone else and kept it a secret from him that she was an aristocrat in hiding.

Widow Lady Edwina Ross tries to hire Prescott as a fianc? to help her catch an aristocratic blackmailer. He says no until she mentions she has business ties at the docks that could help his ventures so he agrees. Then he kisses her; both are shook by the reaction. At the same time Spymaster Tristan Wheaton asks his retired mentor Sir Lee to unmask Alexander Quince who is blackmailing the Ton apparently using information gathered from espionage circles. As the two cases converge, Prescott and Edwinna fall in love, but he knows she is too good for him.

The fine lead couple whose diverse background serves as a key ingredient in the plot makes this an excellent Regency romance as their relationship slowly grows once respect occurs. The solid support cast especially her peers at the Society for Enrichment & Learning for Females and those at the orphanage add depth to understanding Prescott and Edwinna respectively. Though the climax seems too easy, fans will enjoy Sari Robin's latest "Anderson Hall" tale (see ONE WICKED NIGHT and MORE THAN A SCANDAL).
