This is a beautiful little book. It's about a little puppy
named, Whiskers, who breaks free of his leash and runs into the
woods. As he's carefree and running around a sly, evil, fox spies
him and chases Whiskers."Dinner" for the fox, perhaps? A wise &
clever rabbit sees what's happening and helps the puppy escape
the fox by leading him into his rabbit hole. Then Whiskers, the puppy,
meets Father Rabbit's family, his wife, Mother Rabbit, and
their three tiny baby bunnies. The puppy stays for a nice dinner
of cooked carrots and plays a few games with the tiny bunny siblings.
When the coast is clear Father Rabbit lets Whiskers know it's
safe for him to return home. When Whiskers arrives home the little
girl is crying on the stairs, but she is elated when she sees her puppy
is finally home again. The story is told with pictures, but no words. But
as they always say, "A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words". :)

This little story is told without words, and it's lovely for interacting with a child as you read with them and having a conversation about what they think is happening.

The plot is quite simple: dog gets lost, dog meets rabbit family and has dinner with them, plays with the rabbit children, dog returns home. However, the art is what really makes this a little gem. The style is fairly realistic, but Carrol somehow manages to make even animal faces so expressive - it makes it easy for a child to decipher what's happening, and also, and at an age when a child is learning social cues, it's a wonderful tool for helping with that.
