Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Focusing on the lives of girls aged 10-14, What I Wish You Knew: Letters from Our Daughters' Lives, and Expert Advice on Staying Connected presents over 200 letters to the editors of American Girl magazine alongside expert advice and practical suggestions for parents. Psychologists, educators, doctors and the girls themselves weigh in on such topics as dating and sexuality, and smoking, drinking, and drugs. This useful resource concludes with a list of books for further reading and organizations that specialize in helping teens.

From Booklist

The buzzword for building strong family relationships is communication, a term central to this sensitive guide for mothers of girls ages 10 to 14. Letters and e-mail correspondence received by the editors at American Girl (the folk who produce the books, etc., about the popular dolls) and Smartgirl.com are the heart of this book, which introduces a variety of girls' age-related concerns--from changes during puberty to family interaction to risky behaviors such as sexual experimentation. The letters, topically organized and apparently edited for grammar, cover little that parents won't have read before. What is different is the approach. A comment from a professional counselor follows each selection to add context. Although the structure sacrifices continuity, it makes this book more approachable than many others on the subject. A solid list of resources will help mothers investigate the issues in more depth. Stephanie Zvirin

This book is incredible!! After talking with my daughter and asking her sobbing if she hated me, I decided I needed some help. I found this wonderful book and it made me realize that so much of what was happening with my daughter was perfectly normal. After reading the book, I look at situations differently that have to do with my tween and understand that she is trying be her own person and not take her pushing me away personally. It's a great book and a must read for all parents of preteen and teenage daughters.
