From Booklist
The buzzword for building strong family relationships is communication, a term central to this sensitive guide for mothers of girls ages 10 to 14. Letters and e-mail correspondence received by the editors at American Girl (the folk who produce the books, etc., about the popular dolls) and Smartgirl.com are the heart of this book, which introduces a variety of girls' age-related concerns--from changes during puberty to family interaction to risky behaviors such as sexual experimentation. The letters, topically organized and apparently edited for grammar, cover little that parents won't have read before. What is different is the approach. A comment from a professional counselor follows each selection to add context. Although the structure sacrifices continuity, it makes this book more approachable than many others on the subject. A solid list of resources will help mothers investigate the issues in more depth. Stephanie Zvirin
