Book Description

October 26, 2010
When you host a program for women, and you open up the phone lines, email box, and Facebook page, you often resonate with their heart-breaking stories. That's been the case as women have tuned in to Moody Radio's Midday Connection, a radio show co-hosted by author Anita Lustrea, and shared their struggles and victories. When issues are raised such as loneliness, friendship, mothering, domestic abuse, sexual addiction, and body image, women pour out their hearts. Lustrea has heard heart-breaking stories through the years, and those stories have intersected with her own story of heartbreak. God lovingly weaves these stories into a tapestry to be used for His glory. Lustrea's story means nothing without the impact of all of the other stories she has heard. Sometimes the church tries to sweep the hard stories under the carpet. Somehow we've gotten the impression that the hard things of life shouldn't be shared. But when you allow your stories to become known, start to interact with the stories of others, and then allow God to work in and through your life, something miraculous starts to happen. In What Women Tell Me, Anita Lustrea tells her story along with the difficult stories of other women. For a long time, she listened to those who said 'you can only hurt others by sharing your wounds.' When she realized that was a lie, she saw for the first time that through her wounds, she could be an agent of healing in the body of Christ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Difficult, Painful, but very Helpful January 4, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Anita Lustrea, from Moody Radio, has put together a short book(200 pages), but quite insightful telling of the common problems all woman face in today's world. The intro sums it up with the title: finding freedom from the secrets we keep. She relates her own 'secrets' or experiences as well as those of others that deal with the most hurtful of issues. Her book is Christian based.

She begins with lonliness. Even in fellowship/church- how the pasted on smiles, and "I'm fine" and the meaningless "How are you's" are so common place to all of us. Even with multiple functions and servanthood, despair and emptiness can run rampant even among Believers. Hard to trust, afraid of being hurt, high expectations on ourselves, the Church can become a microcosm of what we face in the secular world.

Chapter 2 discusses friendships- making and keeping, and what that entails. I've seen more people, including me, struggle with the in's and out's of being a friend. Whew, and a lot of hurt feelings regarding she/he did or didn't do or say, etc. Again, I hate to say it, but while Christians can be incredibly tough in the world, facing amazing trials and tribulations, internally within the confines of the Church and personal relationships, we can be incredibly sensitive and hurt easily.

Furthermore, Ms. Lustrea covers topics ranging from children, husband, single parenting, domestic violence, divorce, and I believe one of the most horrific blights on our society, for Believers and non-Believers alike, porn and sexual addiction.

Since the day our government, more or less, gave the OK on allowing free and copious, easy access to porn, millions of(mostly, but not always) men, have been dragged down into this unrelenting bondage which is so often brushed aside by the user as 'not hurting anyone', at least in the initial stages, but, in reality, causing immense, destructive harm to self and to all those, especially the family, around them. The author talks briefly about the vicious cycle, like addictions in general, that sex addicts get into, and offers heartfelt input and direction.

Obviously, all these topics can be quite complex, beyond any book, and outside intervention, ASAP!, is needed, but I like the way she approaches them: with awareness, enpowerment, godly encouragement and hope.

May I say, there's always hope and power for us beyond anything we could ever imagine. God help you and bless you!
