About the Author

Cal Thomas has been observing the dysfunction in Washington for thirty years in one of the most popular syndicated columns in the country. He writes the Common Ground column for USA Today (with his liberal Democrat friend, Bob Beckel) and regularly appears on Fox News. This book takes on a whole new approach to looking at why things continually happen over and over again in Washington. While I did not agree with Thomas' opinions on many aspects, it still was interesting looking at how he analyzed things and looked at America. The book is pointed and blunt and you see why people like his writing as he hold nothing back. He uses humor as well as logic to bring you full circle to the ideas that he is trying to address and share. He is clear and puts forth a conservative view of America, but also disagrees with some of the Republican Party platform too. If you are more of a liberal like me, you will probably not appreciate all of the arguments, but you will gain a better perspective on the conservative ideas that are pervasive in America today.

Common sense solutions for a stronger America. Forward by Sean Hannity. It's Groundhog Day in Washington. Cover features Mr. Thomas with a groundhog and dressed in a top hat like it's Groundhog Day. He goes as far as even mentioning the Bill Murray movie of the same name.
"We haven't just emerged from a cave and must discover fire or invent the wheel."
With quotes from the book of Ecclesiastes and the Federalist Papers, Mr Thomas makes this point right off the bat. We need to go back to what works and stop doing what doesn't work. This book is broken down into four parts part one consult the past and use common sense Part 2, concentrate on people not politics ,Part 3 we can solve our problems and part 4 what will work . The author is one of the most popular syndicated columnists in the country. 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of his syndicated column. I have been reading Cal Thomas for a long time, had read his previous books, and was expecting a book like this one very soon. Given the unrest of today, the author is a voice crying out in the wilderness. I would consider this a Christian political book as it explains politics from a Christian perspective. The Bible is quoted along with the founding fathers. The basics of the book to get back to what works. We don't need to relive Groundhog Day everyday. My concern is most people won't read this book that really need to because it comes from a Christian conservative columnist.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how to fix the problems of this country, and to those who already agree with the author, to realize you are not alone. There are others with a voice in the media who agree with you.

This is the best politically-related book with a groundhog on the cover that I have ever read. It certainly supports the idea that groundhogs are conservative by nature, because otherwise I figure the groundhog would be attacking Cal Thomas instead of being happily photoshopped onto his shoulder. (I’m guessing it’s a composited photo, since there are separate credits for the author pic and the groundhog pic.)

I’m not here to deal with photography, though, I’m supposed to look at the content of What Works: Common Sense Solutions for a Stronger America. So, let’s move on from the cover shot…or the tagline of “It’s groundhog day in Washington.” At least Thomas has settled on our government being locked on February 2. I’m pretty sure they’re all locked on April 1.

First and foremost, if you do not know Thomas’ political views, he’s conservative. Very conservative. If you hold the opposing views, you will most likely not like this book, nor will you like this review. I happen to think most of Thomas’ political viewpoint makes sense, so if you think the government should tax everyone into identical incomes to provide identical lives for everyone, you’ll dislike me, this review, and this book pretty solidly.

If you are a fan of Thomas, you’re aware of his writing style. He’s a newspaper columnist, which basically prefigures the modern blogger: you have to hit the point, hit it memorably, and hit it short. The difference in columnists and bloggers is this: any idiot can blog, but there are limited spots for columnists, so you have to be good at it to do it for a living.

Thomas has been good at it for nearly 30 years. What Works ends up reading like a string of columns organized by topic and concept.

[Note: This book was provided free of charge by BookLook/Zondervan Press in exchange for an honest review.]

While I am not familiar with Cal Thomas as an author or as a columnist (he is apparently a particularly popular one), this book is a rhetorically sound book of modest length (a little over 200 pages) that features humorous commentary from a conservative populist worldview. It is the combination of these two qualities that appears to account for the author’s popularity among newspaper readers as well as the fact that he is a particularly common “token” conservative for such efforts as NPR’s “All Things Considered” and other related efforts. His populism makes it clear that he is looking out for the best interests of the commonfolk and his conservatism comes from a respect for the tried and true as opposed to the novel and the untried. This combination of approaches generally agrees with my own, and I found his work to be refreshingly honest in looking at practical solutions to the problems that plague contemporary American society.

This book has some scathing things to say about our contemporary political elite, both on the right and on the left. Among its most scathing comments about our Congressmen is this gem, from page 17, “According to opinion polls, Congress has an approval rating lower than cockroaches and colonoscopies and only slightly above pedophiles.” Ouch! Comments like this should please those readers, of which there are likely to be many, who will relish such ferocious barbs directed at incompetent government leaders and who relish the application of common sense solutions to the problems of our contemporary society in a way that shows an indifference to who gets credit and a desire to make things work.
