WYNONNA At Her Best,
By Lee Walker (Russellville, Arkansas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What The World Needs Now Is Love (Audio CD)
GOSH!! WOW!! What can I say? This CD is excellent and is filled with great country tunes from the one and only, WYNONNA!!! Each and every song has it's own meaning Wynonna style and Wynonna sings them all perfectly!! I see a lot of radio material here with this CD!!! It would be hard to just pick one favorite within this Wynonna collection. This has to be Wy's best CD as it purely shines through with each and every track. "I Want To Know What Love Is" is breathtaking on this remake; the best remake I've ever heard! Wy's current smash single, "What The World Needs Now" truly represents the current times of the world! "Sometimes I Feel Like Elvis" pulls at your heart stings and makes you think how important LOVE is in this world and without it, nothing else measures up! "No One's Gonna Break Me Down" brings out the sassy Wynonna as she gears up for some stompin' good times on this CD as well as all the other foot-stomping, heart tugging songs. My favorite I guess would be, "Your Day Will Come," a great radio, up tempo song...I love it!! Wynonna has truly poured her heart and soul into this CD and it shows BRIGHT!!!! Perfect in every way!!! Thanks Wy, for another fabulous collection!!!!

Without a doubt-her best solo album to date,
This review is from: What The World Needs Now Is Love (Audio CD)
I'm a huge Wy fan and I can find songs on each one her cd's that I love but this is the first cd where I can't pick out a favorite song. I love them all. They are all PERFECT. Wynonna delivers each song in it's own special way-whether it's rock, country, gospel or pop. Don't take my word for it-get yourself a copy or read some of the music site reviews.

I think I have to agree with Billboard magazine: This is, so far this year, hands-down the best CD released in 2003!! Nashville's power-house vocalist, Wynonna, returns with a huge bang with some of the best material of her career. These songs highlight this mega-star's magnificent pipes better than anything she has recorded before. The strength of the songwriting here is incredible and absolutely touching at the same time. With Faith Hill's producer behind the wheel, Wynonna is given a release that brilliantly showcases her talent; and hopefully many new soon-to-be-fans will realize what a great artist she is and always has been. There is no voice in Nashville that can compare to her vocal talent, in range or in intensity. The instrumentation here is probably the best of her career. This CD is like a little gift from heaven to all of us - the lyrics bring us happiness, joy, acceptance, love, self-esteem, and inner strength - which is exactly what Wy wanted in this release. Oh my gosh, how can you pick the best songs on this CD? They are all incredibly awesome, and that's a phrase I don't throw around lightly when critiquing CDs!! I never in my wildest dreams thought Wynonna could outdo all her previous efforts with this CD!! I was really blown away by her live performance of "What the World Needs Now" on the Academy of Country Music Awards back in May. It is such an uplifting song and yet has a very refreshing sound. The CD version of the song is good and retains that refreshing sound, but I have to say those of you who missed the live performance missed a phenomenal acoustical interpretation!! She got one of the loudest shouts of praise and claps of the whole night of performances. If Wy has ever recorded a gem of a ballad - it is this one, "Heaven Help Me". You just have to hear it. I sincerely hope this song becomes a huge hit for her! "It All Comes Down to Love" is a great, fun song about how media moguls seem to `have the answer to all our problems', but really love and acceptance are the answers. The song says, `Talking heads talking to us on the television, silver screen preachers and politicians, say they got the answer - first they gotta squeeze us, send a little money - there's tax on Jesus'... and.... `It's just a cheap thrill when you're looking for the answer'. It was a pleasant surprise to hear mama Naomi helping out Wy on the old-time song "Flies on the Butter".... "Sometimes I Feel Like Elvis" is about a woman who loses her husband... `What am I supposed to do with this house and these cars, All this so called success the good Lord's given me, I'd gladly give it all away right now, Just to see you walk through that gate, Up the drive and back to the simple we used to be, Before the money and the lawyers and the lies and the chains, and all this fame'. This is a very good song!! "I Will Be" is an assertive, self-esteem booster as the chorus says, "I will be here, I will be strong, I'll face my fears, when the night is long, and still go on, I will be brave, I will be bold, follow my faith, to a higher road, and I'm not there yet, but I will be!" "Rescue Me" is a touching song by Katie Darnell, who lost her battle with brain cancer recently and wrote this song herself, `What do you do when the path leads nowhere, when you need someone to be there, now you're afraid of what's gonna come, and now there's nowhere to run, I love Thee, Rescue me, shine your light lead me home, Lord all I need is your love." Another incredible song. You have to look pretty hard to find any song on this release that is sub-standard - everything here is such a breath of fresh air to country radio and even pop radio for that matter. I never dreamed this CD would be her best-to-date, but it is. You gotta own this CD... it is everything we have come to expect from Wynonna and so much more!!

Compelling and Refreshing,
By A Customer
This review is from: What The World Needs Now Is Love (Audio CD)
Wynonna's new disc is loaded with a vast assortment of compelling and refreshing music, both in melody and lyric. Each track on this CD offers intelligent lyrics and ideas, underscored with catchy yet meaningful music that never compromises the artist's integrity (ie, doesn't fall into the cookie-cutter, pop-crossover phenomenon that seems to strong-arm many music formats these days). This collection of music admirably stands alone, and deservedly so. Many of the songs are upbeat: What the World Needs, It All Comes Down to Love, Burnin' Love, No One's Gonna Break Me Down. But that doesn't mean that Wynonna doesn't overwhelm us with the occasional powerhouse ballad-Heaven Help Me. Her softer side also comes across on the tracks: Flies on the Butter, You Are (a track which Wynonna co-wrote!), and Rescue Me. Fortunately, none of these mellow diddies can be branded sappy or considered to be filler. They are fine examples of intelligent music, which helps highlight Wynonna's tremendous vocal capabilities. Perhaps she is at her absolute finest as she belts out her countrified version of "I Want to Know What Love Is" and catapults her heart and soul into the chorus of "Sometimes I Feel Like Elvis." The album will not disappoint. It is quite possibly her strongest recording effort to date. Actually, let's go ahead and scratch that--this IS the definitive Wynonna CD!

Wynonna and her amazing voice are back!,

This review is from: What The World Needs Now Is Love (Audio CD)
Wynonna's new CD is sweet, sultry and sophisticated! Very few artists could pull off the range of music on this CD. She's lost some of her country twang, and replaced it with this incredibly powerful voice. Even with the range of music (a little country, a little blues, a little pop/rock), I enjoyed every song on the CD. Wynonna has this amazing ability to combine her power with a soft edge, taking you along her journey. Yes, there's a sentimental song with Mom Naomi Judd; and yes, there's a sweet song dedicated to sister Ashley Judd. But she's also included a remake of "I Want to Know What Love Is" with Jeff Beck and the tender "Heaven Help Me." There's even a litte "Burning Love" from the popular Lilo and Stitch movie. Simply, the CD is unexpected and that's what makes it so interesting to listen to. Wynonna's voice is at its best and one senses that she's found her home in the music world. Welcome back Wynonna!

What The World Needs Now Is WYNONNA!,

This CD is absolutely the best album Wynonna has ever recorded. Each song showcases her amazing vocal ability and wide range of styles. Ranging from Country, to Rock, to R&B, she seemingly effortlessly proves that she can sing it all! An outstanding collection of top notch songs, arrangements, and flawless productions! Every song is awesome. Every single one! The best that I like so far..."Heaven Help Me (If I Ever Lose Your Love)"...a ballad that shines and shows what this Diva can do! I also love "I Want To Know What Love Is"...originally recorded by Foreigner...this version is amazing...Wy sings like never before and makes this song her own! Stunning!!! There are many other great songs....the country/calypso flavored "It All Comes Down To Love", hopefully a sure-fire radio hit, and of course, the country hit single, "What The World Needs Now", just to name a few! Congratulations to Wynonna...this album has debuted at #1 on Billboards Country Album Chart, and #8 on Billboards Top 200 Album Chart! An awesome achievement for an awesome singer with a superb album! What The World Needs Now Is WYNONNA!!!!!

This is one gorgeous CD that starts slowly and keeps building momentum so that the final product feels like a nice little journey in which you are being led by one of the sweetest and must powerful voices on this earth. Although originally released in 2003, Wynonna indicates in the insert that she'd been working on this release since 2000 and almost gave up as she felt that nothing was feeling quite right. I hope that she is resting comfortably as this may be her best release since she went solo. Not surprisingly "What The World Needs Now" is filled with songs about not giving up and finding salvation through love and faith. The first single "What the World Needs Now" has Wynonna sounding like a goddess with a contagious banjo and fiddle side by side with popping drums and electric guitars. She has rarely sounded more in control of her voice than she does here. "Heaven Help Me" is an emotional plea with a piano and a sweeping strings arrangement that lifts this song above being just music. This song is pure Wynonna. "It All Come Down To Love" takes on politics, telemarketing, trash talking tv evangelists and talk-show hosts. It sounds great and again the answer to all these evils comes from love. It may sound cheesy and single-minded to make such a blanket statement, but at the core not even the biggest cynic can take away Wynonna's desire that her faith and love will carry her through life's punches. "Flies on the Butter (You Can't Go Home Again)," has Wynonna singing with Naomi as they take a nostalgic look at childhood in general. It's a wonderful ballad and should remind those who only know Wynonna through her solo work that this mother and daughter harmonized like few in the business. She makes a strong case for the fusion of country rock, r&b, and pop as exemplified by "I Will Be.' Purists may not like when their favorites expand their horizons, but Wynonna is simply too diverse of a singer to remain within any genre. In my view this is simply country soul. Other standouts include her soulful cover of Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is" with Jeff Beck dropping by for some killer guitar mid through the song. The song loses none of its anthem power although I do miss the strong choruses of the original. Wynonna's version of Elvis' "Burnin' Love" is playful and Wynonna sounds like she's having a ball. The low-key "Who Am I Supposed to Love" may be my favorite cut in the whole CD. It has a light jazzy feel blended with her country grit that makes for a lush change of pace. Great strings! ("No One's Gonna) Break Me Down" has Wynonna channeling Janis Joplin via Melissa Etheridge and winds up being pure Wynonna. "You Are" is a gorgeous ballad about.... love of course, but this time it's celebratory and appreciative rather than full of sorrow. The CD ends with "Rescue Me" and there is no doubt that by the end of the song that Wynonna and the listener have been rescued. Since I've fawned all over this release I do have one quibble, which involve the tight Mutt Lange-like choruses that is found in several of the songs. It's not that they sound bad but a little bland to match Wynonna's chops. Although there is not a single dud in the whole CD, "It's Only Love" has a Bonnie Raitt-like feel and has a contagious chorus but it pales versus the vast majority of this amazing release. "Sometimes I Feel Like Elvis" is just OK but it's probably he only song where I did not think that she was connecting with the song. In a nutshell, if you like Wynonna you will love this release. If you have not had the pleasure this would be a great place to start. This release almost earns 5 stars as it makes a strong impact and it earns it. No histrionics, just a great singer named Wynonna.

I'm not a huge country fan but I saw Wy sing one of the songs from this record on T.V. and had to have. It has to be one of the best CD's I've every owned. Some of the songs are food for the soul, some make you want to dance, every one of them is great. I would recommend it to anyone.

What the World Needs Now is Real Music!,

Wynonna has to be one of the most underated vocalists on this side of the planet! There's no hoopla surrounding this release; no swearing and cussing and blaming the world about her past heartaches and misfortunes; no manufactured country music industry "pop tunes" and no hidden messages or agenda. The bottom line here is that there are no gimmicks. The only thing evident about Wy's latest release is her powerhouse vocals that literately make every song come to life. The songs are simple, yet inspiring. If anything, the lyrics are like a release from the commercial mayhem, and social decay that we are caught up in. And you can be sure to find traces of many music genres here...this is a Wynonna trademark. She can sing Country, Rock, Blues, Gospel...whatever! And to top it off she has the best back up singers in the business. As an Elvis fan I don't get excited when other artists cover his music (of course there are exceptions) but during "Burning Love" Wynonna just rocks the house! And after listening to "I Want to Know What Love Is", she makes you quickly forget about the original. Every song on this album is a highlite. This is a definite must, not only for music fans but for those who are believers in the human spirit.

I have never been a big Wynonna fan, but this CD is awesome. Great mix of tunes that leave you wanting additional tracks. Both the new & re-make tunes are well done with Wynonna's voice as pure as ever. I'm very impressed with this overall effort...Wynonna, you go girl!
