5.0 out of 5 stars Thinking clearly about Jesus
If you are tired of an excessively emotional approach to religion that asks you to turn off your mind, you will find this book to be a refreshing alternative. The author guides the reader in applying clear reasoning techniques in thinking about a myriad of issues regarding Jesus in historic and religious contexts. 1.0 out of 5 stars I Haven't Read this Book
But the premise, that Jesus wouldn't know what to do today, is wrong.

"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."

Mr. Fiala, while I respect your right to have an opinion, and admire that you want to teach others what you believe to be true, Jesus would know exactly what to do...

5.0 out of 5 stars Thinking clearly about Jesus, December 18, 2007
This review is from: What Would Jesus Really Do?: The Power & Limits of Jesus' Moral Teachings (Hardcover)
If you are tired of an excessively emotional approach to religion that asks you to turn off your mind, you will find this book to be a refreshing alternative. The author guides the reader in applying clear reasoning techniques in thinking about a myriad of issues regarding Jesus in historic and religious contexts. If taken seriously, this process should enable the reader to become an active participant in an original and legitimate process of critical interpretation rather than being a passive receiver of the culture's religious messages and mandates. These experiences will assist the reader in developing a more meaningful, authentic, and richer relationship to these traditional materials. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Would Jesus Really Do?, September 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: What Would Jesus Really Do?: The Power & Limits of Jesus' Moral Teachings (Hardcover)
This is a thought provoking summary of the "reason" for the "Jesus" Christians believe in. It makes great sense and supports the message of love that Christians often times forget while embrasing small details of other stories in the Bible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A contemplative journey through human ethical beliefs, March 17, 2008
This review is from: What Would Jesus Really Do?: The Power & Limits of Jesus' Moral Teachings (Hardcover)
This book is so engrossing and illuminating it is a must-read for Christians and non-Christians alike. It allows you to delve into subjects that were never touched before such as why things are done the way they are when concerning our ethical choices and values. The conclusion sums the whole book together perfectly when Andrew Fiala states that we must strive to construct universal values that are essential to a good human life without descending into complete relativism. Fiala touches on all sides of the ethical debate, from relativists and nihilists to fundamentalists and humanists. After reading this book I have found I am much closer to discovering the ultimate truth regarding humanity's place in the universe and our views (or lack of) on duality.

But the premise, that Jesus wouldn't know what to do today, is wrong.

"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."

Mr. Fiala, while I respect your right to have an opinion, and admire that you want to teach others what you believe to be true, Jesus would know exactly what to do.

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs."

Our life is no different life 2000 years ago. We are born. We have friends and family. We love, we lose some of those we love, and we die.

What would Jesus really do? He would watch CNN and he would cry. And then he would teach us to love.

"So let us not be blind to our differences, but let us also direct attention to our common interests and the means by which those differences can be resolved... For in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's futures. And we are all mortal."
