Wonder Woman as a role model for women, just as her creator envisioned,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: What Would Wonder Woman Do?: An Amazon's Guide to the Working World (Hardcover)
For decades, Wonder Woman (WW) was the most unusual super hero appearing in the comics. Created by William Moulton Marston to be a role model for girls, she was a full-fledged member of the Justice League, fighting alongside the male heroes. WW was an Amazon, could pilot a plane and was herself faster than a speeding bullet when it came to deflecting them with her bracelets.
This book is a somewhat humorous description of how the pseudo-Amazon in the business world should conduct herself when facing adversity. Despite the references to captions from episodes of WW in the comics and on television, there is a great deal of sound advice in this book and the humor is capable of perking up a smile when it might be needed the most. The business world is a rough one where a person needs to be smart, intellectually flexible, resilient, understanding, humble when necessary and emotionally strong. All characteristics that WW exhibits, making her a role model for the workingwoman as well. The references to actual situations that regularly develop in the organization are not as critical as many facing WW as she battles the super villains, yet the solutions are still applicable. Character, will, determination and honesty are the best ways to face problems of all magnitude. In my home state of Iowa, for the first time two girl wrestlers have made it to the state tournament. It is unfortunate that the first win by a girl in tournament history was due to the fact that her opponent forfeited. He said that he was unwilling to wrestle a girl, considering it inappropriate. Sadly, the girl has learned some of the lessons put forward in WW but the boy has not.

I got this book as a gift for a coworker (should I mention that she is obsessed with Wonder Woman?!). The book totally fit the bill. Very humorous, great artwork featuring a variety of depictions of Wonder Woman (e.g. Lynda Carter, 1940s, 1960s, 1970s, newer). Some of the advice is practical, but most of it is just plain humorous.

I bought this for a female colleague as a gift. It was fun and I love the retro-comic feel of it but I was really looking for something that was aimed more towards professional women and less towards clerical women.
None the less, it was well received.

The WHAT WOULD WONDER WOMAN DO?... book gets 4-stars only because it's a clever idea and the two authors did a nice job weaving job hunting info within a Wonder Woman story line.
There are fun juxtapositions of WW comic strips along with real-world scenearios, i.e. "The Job Interview" and "Co-Workers Friend or Foe," that give readers a sense of what WW would do, and because the reader too can be a WW, she can do the same. But as fun and clever as it is, the book does fall short on in-depth info. Most of the advice is simple and common-sense and the chapters are very short. There's some pratical advice in it, but for the most part this WW book is better suited as a novelty/humor item for a WW fan.

Good gag gift,

This filled the bill perfectly for what I wanted: A gag gift for my girlfriend, who had been struggling with some situations at work. It's a fun book (not to be taken terribly seriously, although there are some good lessons in it).

Awesome book,
This review is from: What Would Wonder Woman Do?: An Amazon's Guide to the Working World (Hardcover)
My grandfather bought this book for me, since I told him I like Wonder Woman stuff.
I have to tell you, I was elated with this find! It is a cute book, and I brought it into work for novelty sake. However, I actually handed it to a co-worker who was being inappropriate, and said, "Hey here is a neat book, have a look at it. You might find some good pointers..." There is some common sense stuff in there that might make you think about certain situations, but overall, it's just for fun. |
