This review is from: What A Year It Was! 1958 (Hardcover)
"What A Year It Was! 1958" is one of a series of books commemorating some of the middle years of the 20th Century. The large format book contains an interesting collection of photographs, extracts from magazines and newspapers, and advertisements from a variety of sources, all providing a flavor of the times.

In 1958, Dwight Eisenhower was President, the Yankees won the World Series, the Oscar for Best Picture went to "The Bridge on the River Kwai", the top TV program was "Gunsmoke", and the US has just put its first satellite into earth orbit. There are listings for a variety of other political, cultural, and sports events. The advertisements add alot; the top selling sound system in 1958 was the size of a small refrigerator and the average car was big, really big. The death of James Doolittle, the USAF Colonel who led a famous raid over Tokyo early in the Second World War, was honored with a ceremony featuring his surviving raiders and a B-25 bomber.

"What A Year It Was! 1958" is out of print but highly recommended even in used condition to those folks for whom 1958 was for any reason a special year.
