Coming into his own,

BIG fan of his father, I've been listening to Dweezil since his earliest outings with Frank's band. Saw him on the "Zappa Plays Zappa" tour. While that was immensely satisfying, I was hoping that Dweezil would continue building his own legacy. He has!I have enjoyed all of his CD's, but I think this is his best. While his skill as a guitarist was never in doubt, his skill as a composer and producer is now truly evident. There is no doubt that he is coming into his own as a composer, and that's what I enjoy most about this CD -- new, really well-written compositions. Two nods to Frank: a "duet" version of Peaches and a practice session for the Inca Roads guitar solo. My least favorite tracks on the CD, but Joe Travers (drums) breathes inspiration into that simple Inca Roads riff that is very impressive. Not that either of these two tracks are "bad", but the rest is just that much better. If Dweezil continues this level of committment to his music, and given the pattern of his career there's no reason to doubt that he will, I can't wait for his next CD!

DZ composed and played most of the sounds on this fantastic recording. Alot of the time it sounds like a Zappa - a more accessible watered down version of his father perhaps - but modern, fresh, alive and creative none the less. There is some pedestrian playing here (Van Halenish riffs) but there's also some really beautiful sounds, played with a nice balance of tribute to the incomprable, irreplaceable FZ and to his own particular muse. (We get alot of FZ inspired guitar tones and rhythms composed/arranged in Dweezil's own way, and DZ tends towards prettier arrangements than his father.)I saw DZ and the Zappa Plays Zappa tour in Seattle (can't wait to see the DVD made that night!) last month and was blown away by the faithful spirit of the playing. Once they got warmed up they were really on, giving it their heart and soul. It'll be interesting to see how DZ continues to balance this desire to play and promote his Dad's legacy and develop his own. It's an interesting phenomena.... and worth getting this CD to see how it's beginning. My personal favorites here are when he sounds more like himself...I was excited to hear him play along with the original tape of Peaches and Regalia, but it turned out to be one of the CD's weaker tracks. Thats a good thing and sez alot.

The Woodshed Shows,

DZ as it would appear, woodshedded himself away, hired the teachers out there three years ago.. they taught him how to read music and he found out how to write music.this cd shows that off quite a bit. I saw the Zappa plays Zappa tour in Houston, and DZ was just great. Zappa fans should get ready because I bet that DZ will be starting a new life in music.... it has 'hit him' The arrangements of songs vary quite a bit. You have eddie van halen sounds on one song then you have a very large map of music. I like all of it, but it helps to see him play live. Have fun.
