5.0 out of 5 stars Way out there..., November 25, 2010

If you want a sample of what's coming, just read "Save As". It's a very disturbing concept, and packs a lingering punch for a few weeks after. If you never wanted to do what the protagonist did, you probably never lost loved ones. Not recommended for black-and-white types, Mr Smith's short stories condenses huge concepts into dream-like sequences. To my mind, there are echoes of Iain Banks, Ballard and Gibson here in the isolation and level of desperation of his players, but he stands alone in the way he can twist your mind. Not all the stories are on the same level - some are broken shards of ideas - but the top 5 in here alone deserves 5 stars. If new to his earlier work, rather start with his novel "Spares" for an easier read - this is as dark as it gets. Highly recommended, but if you have an active imagination, and prefer more subtle sledgehammers, you have been warned.
