4.0 out of 5 stars Lustra takes the whole concept of pop meets punk and makes it work, September 3, 2009
This review is from: What You Need & What You Get (Audio CD)
The Good
"Better Unknown" kicks things off with a two minute bang that keeps your toes tapping from beginning to end. "Dinosaur" is lead by a driving rhythms and deep, haunting vocals that recall a little new-wave punk. Lustra picks the tempo back up with a hometown anthem "It's a Shame About Boston." "Kids in Make-Up" could be construed as the theme for those withdrawn gothic people everyone has come across in their life. "Greeting Card" has one of the blaring riffs that will make you want to jump around. "No One Like Me" is a dark ballad about shattered relationships. "Sink in Time" is dominated by a commanding chugga-chugga riff.

The Bad
Nothing notable

The Verdict
Ask any punk fan of the 70s what they think of pop-punk and they'll rip it up from one end to the other. They have good reason most of the time. Most of these bands that label themselves as such typically have the whiniest, tone deaf singers. Although, were the punk singers of the 70s tuneful? Irregardless, Lustra takes the whole concept of pop meets punk and makes it work. Simple three or four chord changes mixed with melodic yet edgy vocals is what separates What You Need & What You Get from the homogenized mainstream pop-punkers.
