Last week I was told that I had a form of secondary glaucoma. This was not totally unexpected, but it was still a shock: enough of a shock that I couldn't think of any sensible questions to ask the ophthalmologist who told me. Still, as he wasn't the ophthalmologist who diagnosed it, he may not have been able to answer some of my questions anyway. So, I left his office in a state of shock but determined to find out more about this `sneak thief of sight'.

This book was one of the first I was able to acquire, and I found it contains a lot of valuable information. With its help, I was able to differentiate types of glaucoma, read up on the treatment I've been prescribed and start work on a list of questions for my treating specialists. It was sobering to read that the common thread among all glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve and that there are more than forty different types of glaucoma, not of all of which are associated with raised intraocular pressure. It was discomfiting to read that the damage caused by glaucoma cannot be reversed. It was frightening to realise that most (but not all) forms of glaucoma have no symptoms or cause no change in vision until late in the course of the disease.

It is not possible to absorb all of the information contained within this book on one reading, nor will it all be equally relevant to all glaucoma sufferers. While the resource information contained in the book is especially useful to readers in North America, most of the information will be relevant to readers elsewhere.

I recommend this book to those who want, or need, to know more about glaucoma. For sufferers, no book can substitute for specialist care. But the information in this book may well assist you in working with your specialist to manage your own care in an informed and optimal way.

This book was recommended by my ophthamologist, and I found it extremely thorough, readable and well-organized. It answered many of my questions, and raised others I hadn't thought about. I continue to use it as a reference. It was written 6 yeard ago, which I considered a negative, but unfortunately not much has changed in the intervening years concerning treatment of the disease.

I found this book very useful in a number of ways. While it has some highly technical areas, it is very good at explaining the many different forms of glaucoma. Understanding in simple terms what causes glaucoma, helped me more to understand the treatment. Here too it was helpful in providing tips on properly administering the eye drops. I can now go back to my eye doctor with more educated questions and move to a higher level in our discussions.

Dr. Harmon has included everything in this book that you should know if you have glaucoma, you are a glaucoma suspect, or you have glaucoma in your family. I have read a number of books on the subject and none are as inclusive as "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Glaucoma. Dr. Harmon studied at John Hopkins University, St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Harmon is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Weill Medical College of Cornell Univeristy New York Presbyterian Hospital, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Glaucoma Foundation.

Very informative with quite a lot of details and sometimes very confusing to help select the best treatment. I would like to see best treatments for treating my type of neovascular glaucoma, which surfaced three years (not one hundred days) following Retinal central vein occlusion treated with "as needed" avastin injuctions (5). Glaucoma was rapid onset with pain in one eye and an iop of 55. No diabetes. This was too much to be absorbed and I would like to see something broken down for cases like mine to enable me to select what type of laser treatment or a second tube-shunt to alleviate 42 iop.
