More About the Author

Katherine Applegate's many books include the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter book series, the picture book The Buffalo Storm, and the award-winning novel Home of the Brave. With her husband, Michael Grant, she wrote the hugely popular series Animorphs, which has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.

Katherine was inspired to write The One and Only Ivan after reading about the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, the Shopping Mall Gorilla. The real Ivan lived alone in a tiny cage for twenty-seven years at a shopping mall before being moved to Zoo Atlanta after a public outcry. He is now a beloved celebrity at the zoo, which houses the nation's largest collection of western lowland gorillas. Ivan is well known for his paintings, which he "signs" with a thumb-print.

Katherine lives in California with her husband and two children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zoey's In for A Suprise!, February 6, 2000
Zoey comes back from a ski trip angry because of her boyfriend. She finds her mother having an affair with some man. She discovers that her father also had another woman in his life. She's devastated. She's afraid to tell her friends. What should she do? But that's not all. She and her brother get shocked when they discover their fathers terrible secret. A real page turner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drama, tears, surprises..., May 2, 2000
Well what a shocker! i never would of put Jake's dad and Zoey's mum together in a million years! the book portrayed a sensitive issue really well, but i thought Zoey was being really harsh with Lucas. c'mon, what he did wasn't all that terrible and i don't blame him for being a bit peed off with Zoey. Why didn't she tell him for God's sake? Benjamin and Nina are as cute as ever and are my two favourite characters. Poor Christopher though. let's just hope he doesn't end up in prison or something! i love the series and i'd recommend it to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars A suspensful and romantic book, May 2, 1999
Zoey, after fighting with Lucas about his need for sex, runs back to Chatham Island only to discover that her mother is(dum dum dum) having an affair!!!! Shame, shame! When she is comforted by her ex, Jake, Lucas starts to hang with Claire in jealousy. Hmmmm.... Nina and Benjamin are a sickeningly happy couple. Meanwhile, Christopher, who was beat up by racist skinheads, seeks revenge. After the other Making Out books, I thought this was a LITTLE weak. I still loved it, though, so get it. Read it. Love it.
