Book Description

February 1, 2010
The publication from 1954 of Gerald Gardner's non-fiction works on witchcraft has led to the current public existence of two different trends of religious and magical belief and practice, both which identify themselves as "Wicca". One form places a strong emphasis upon the transmission of traditional practices and a form of initiatory lineage similar to that practised by Gardner himself. The other covers a wider range of views on each of these aspects, but with the most common position being a strong distance between the traditional practices-giving a greater importance to innovation-and a complete or near-complete abandonment of the concept of initiatory lineage. Both trends often see themselves and each other as being within a wider religio-magical stream of Post-Gardnerian Pagan Witchcraft of which the innovative form is a larger part, though in different ways. The traditional view of the innovative form typically labels that form "Eclectic" even in cases where the practitioners would understand "Eclectic" differently, and considers it to be something outside of what it terms "Wicca". The innovative form generally labels all Post-Gardnerian Pagan Witchcraft, or beyond, as "Wicca", and as such recognizes all traditional practitioners as Wiccan but does not generally make more significant distinctions between the various schools. The traditional stream considers the differences between the two streams as significant to the point of typicality while the innovative stream considers the differences as much less important. This book examines the differences and offers insights into both.

More About the Author

Jon Hanna (1976- ) was born in Co. Down, Northern Ireland and has lived in Dublin, Ireland almost continually, since the age of 18.

He has practised several types of witchcraft since 1996, before being initiated into the Alexandrian Tradition in 2007.

In writing an essay as part of his training in that Tradition, he failed to keep an essay within the requested length; a felix culpa that resulted in the book-length essay that was later developed into his first book, "What thou wilt". This work was inspired by the differing experiences he himself had with different forms of witchcraft, but looks not to such individual experience but to compare different practices in their practitioners' own words, using publicly available resources to back up his assertions, and to consider wider societal influences that may have affected the differences that exist in the practice of witchcraft today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb..., November 14, 2010
This review is from: What thou wilt: Traditional and Innovative trends in Post-Gardnerian Witchcraft (Paperback)
What Thou Wilt: Traditional and Innovative trends in Post-Gardnerian Witchcraft, by Jon Hanna, is a brilliant comparative exposé on the differences between traditional Wicca and innovative or eclectic forms of Wicca. Originally an essay in partial fulfillment of his Second Degree, the author has exceeded expectations in the quality and quantity of his work. In the forward, the High Priestess of the Serpent Coven (Dublin), Barbara Lee, sums up the approach taken by Hanna best, by saying, "His explorations here are very different to other books that have attempted to look at different strands of Wicca and Witchcraft. Unlike Drawing Down the Moon, by Margot Adler or The Pagan Path by Janet and Stewart Farrar, this is not a book that draws upon individual practices and draws conclusions, but rather, he takes an overview and looks at the different strands of Post-Gardnerian Wicca and Witchcraft from a much broader point of view, looking at the wider societal influences that have caused many of the changes within the various strains of Wicca and Witchcraft."

Hanna's ability to address the material in a manner that is neither confrontational nor aloof lends to the flavour of this work as being one written by an Academic, but his attention to detail and an understanding of the underlying emotions found within the Wiccan community speaks to his intimate relationship with Wicca and passion for the subject.

This is a book that I would recommend to anyone interested in the workings of the Wiccan community and having an interest in what distinguishes a traditional path from an innovative path, Pagan and non-Pagan alike. In my opinion, What Thou Wilt: Traditional and Innovative trends in Post-Gardnerian Witchcraft, should be required reading for all persons embarking on the Pagan path.

Absolutely brilliant piece of work!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute Must Read, August 3, 2011

This review is from: What thou wilt: Traditional and Innovative trends in Post-Gardnerian Witchcraft (Paperback)
In this book, authour Jon Hanna gracefully tackles many issues - including very controversial ones - topical in modern Witchcraft and Wicca traditions with respect and diplomacy. Whether you are an initiate with a lineage that goes back to the New Forest, or an 'Eclectic' solitary, or part of another modern iniatory system of Witchcraft this book is (in my opinion) required reading.

This is a very intelligent book, and I recommend having some paper nearby to take notes, as the book seems designed to aid the reader in further unpacking his/her own thoughts around several practices, beliefs and assumptions in Craft matters. This book is for all those who wish for something 'beyond Wicca 101' as it challenges many pet theories and popular assumptions one encounters both in print and on the internet, and further expores common witchcraft practices.

If you are Wiccan, want to be, or even simply a'Wiccan inspired'Neo-Pagan or Witch, then you should really read this book. I can't recommend it enough!
