As with a new Madonna movie, critics are always on top of their game to criticize and reject any new material from Whitney. She has tried to turn the tables and emphasize the effect that critics are having on her career and in the process, the critics have spun it into "a failed Whitney single." 1.0 out of 5 stars Puhleeze!!
I have no idea what Houston was thinking when she decided to release this junk as a single. Just the song title alone is enough to make my stomach going in a 180 spin. The beats are generic, predictable, and lifeless and the song overall is just a miserable failure at trying to aim at the TRL audience and it isn't helping Houston's floundering career especially with all...

She has tried to turn the tables and emphasize the effect that critics are having on her career and in the process, the critics have spun it into "a failed Whitney single." Justin Timberlake recycles Slave 4 You, and he is supposed to be the future of music, however "the Voice" speaks out and is lambasted. This is in fact an excellent song with even better remixes, Thunderpuss having outdone themselves since their take on "It's not Right...." A five star single, hands down

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Get Mad, Get Even, September 21, 2003
This review is from: Whatchulookinat (Audio CD)
For Whitney Houston, the past few years remained as difficult and as unbelieveable as you could expect from her. Still, she has ways of still showing her voice, and what she has to say about doubters. That really goes the same with Whatchulookinat, the first song released from Whitney Houston's 2002 record, Just Whitney. The song is a letter the tabloids for stalking and assault from the victim's point of view, Whitney. The song is a lot tougher than any of Whitney's other songs. Still, she also expanded a bit more within her family on this song, with thanks from her husband, Bobby Brown. I think it is a good quality song, and just listening to two sides of the story, not one. I still think that a lot of fans abandoned her because of the National Examiner, but her voice is still as exciting as it was years ago. Still, if you haven't heard the song, get Just Whitney.

4.0 out of 5 stars DONT LOOK AT ME (BUT PLEASE BUY MY SINGLE)!, October 7, 2002

Well here we are, on the verge of a the first new Whitney product for years. After the re-packaging (and re're-packaging) of her greatest hits, Whitney readies herself for the inevitable criticism. The single version, and Bobby Brown remix are pleasant, if familiar, time wasters. The Full Intention mix turns the screws but lacks a serious brakdown / hands in the air moment. Thankfully Thunderpuss have taken this opporunity to turn out a classic mix which both follows, and breaks, their own club anthem rules. Other reviewers dont seem keen, but I would argue this is the best mix Thunderpuss have turned out in years and helps lift this single from 2 to 4 stars.

The beats are generic, predictable, and lifeless and the song overall is just a miserable failure at trying to aim at the TRL audience and it isn't helping Houston's floundering career especially with all the bad press surrounding her career. The song aims at trying to lash out at the media but the lyrics though, are simply immature and amateurish for someone who's had a career spanning over 15 years and it's saddening to see Whitney fall this low. I could think up of better lyrics from scratch in three hours. This single is just a pitiful waste of a comeback opportunity. >:-(

1.0 out of 5 stars Whitney Goes Bust., December 10, 2002

This review is from: Whatchulookinat (Audio CD)
What are WE looking at? The better question to ask is, "what are we listening to?" Whitney's kickoff single from her first album in four years finds our heroine biting back at reporters who hound the troubled diva. The single, co-produced by Bobby Brown, is so joyless and lyrically defensive, it makes Michael Jackson look emotionally secure. The last thing Houston needs to do is to portray herself as a victim. This single would stand a chance of redeeming itself if it were actually danceable, but even the groove in "Whatchulookinat" is bland and uninspired. If she continues releasing duds like this, her fans won't be "lookin'" or even listening to her anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great song!, October 23, 2002

This song has a very good beat and I like the fact that Whitney is speaking out on what she thinks about the media. I think it's a great comeback song and it's a great uptempo track. I also love the Thunderpuss remix, it's great. The puff daddy remix I like it less, but it's still okay. I recommend her new single and I can't wait for the new album!

"Just Whitney" is one of my all-time favorite Whitney Houston masterworks and many missed out on this incredible musical treat because of poor promotion and brain-washing media hype than the Diva had seen better days...ultimately I would say it was because Whitney fired back at negative media coverage with this great cooker of a song that should have been a huge mega-hit as it only takes a few spins to realize this infectious song is a well-crafted winner...even thought the media led many away from this unique song, hard-core music lovers who have their own mind in making musical choics and ultimately make their own decisions about the credibility of an artist, found "Whatchulookinat" to be a great and lasting musical moment from our wondrous Whitney to be enjoyed over and over again and for years to come...the message is credible and real.
"Whatchulookinat" is placed at the end of "Just Whitney" and this infectious rhythm cooker featuring a fiery and commanding vocal from Whitney is so thrilling that as it ends anyone who loves a great singer in a collection of richly varied songs will be reaching for that repeat mode to start the whole magical musical adventure all over again.
Bravo Whitney!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's Time To Strike Back, March 16, 2003
This review is from: Whatchulookinat (Audio CD)
The single for WHATCHULOOKINAT is a must for avid Whitney fans. The song was leaked on the internet in late summer 2002, and it was basically Whitney striking back against the media, for twisting lies and being all up in her business. The song is catchy and infectuous, but it failed to capture the hearts of radio or listeners. The song itself is quite nice but I have to say the main reason to own this single is for the Thunderpuss Remix, it is excellent and perfect for club play (they play it all the time here at some of the clubs here...). The other remixes are nice, except I didn't care for the P Diddy remix, but overall if you are a fan of Whitney or Thunderpuss remixes, this is a must own single.

5.0 out of 5 stars It isn't her best song, but it's ok...., February 2, 2003

I'm not a great fan from Whitney, but I know that this song isn't her best... I rate this Single with 5 stars because I very much liked the lirics of this, by the way, many things have hapened with Whitney and this liric is a "check mate" to every body who lie some bad things about her...

And you?? Whatchulookinat??

4.0 out of 5 stars Great remixes for a so so song., November 21, 2002
By
This review is from: Whatchulookinat (Audio CD)
First off I bought this single because it went to number one on the Billboard Club Play chart and only for that. I've heard so much bad stuff about the song which to me is similar to Michael Jackson's recent releases of OH WOE IS ME type songs. So the basis of this review is the remixes and only that. I love the house mixes a lot and you get two incredible mixes here. The Thunderpuss Mix (7:42) just is really well done. It moves from their aggessive style to then an almost Giorgio Moroder Type of music near the middle. Incredible. The Full Intention Club Mix(7:02) is more suited vocally to Whitney's Vocal on the song. Very Retro in style and feel with heavy bass through out. Excellent. The P. Diddy Mix is why it gets 1 star off. It features a sample of KRS-One's "Step Into A World(Rapture's Delight)" which sampled Blondie's superior "Rapture" and this mix is sort of like Michael Jackson's "They Don't Care About Us" and that is not good at all. The house mixes to me save this song from oblivion.
