Another Rapper From the "SWAMP",
By Kevin Nelson (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Whatever (Audio CD)
The underground rap scene in Louisiana has brought forth a number of chart topping artists that have gained national respect in the rap music industry. Another artist that will quickly become another one of these is C-LOC. He is one of the pioneers of rap in Louisiana and like Master P and the Cash Money Clicc, has been around on the local scene for just as long as they have. With his 1996 release of "Whatever," C-LOC broke through the local boundaries of Baton Rouge and gained statewide respect and attention from Lafayette to New Orleans. The album gains momentum from his first, "Who's Gonna Ride?" and tells the story of the rough street world of the "Bout it, Rouge." Classic underground hits like "Never Say Die," "No Mercy," and the most popular hit, "I Wanna Be A G," are included on this album to reach those who didn't check out the first album. New tracks like "Whatever," feature Young Bleed as he was first getting into the rap scene along with other soon to be famous rappers. C-LOC's lyrical content along with his sound and method of delivery are what make him a rap force to be reckoned with. The beats are made by "Happy," who's probably one of the industry's best kept secret, in much of the way that Mannie Fresh of the Big Tymers was before they got their multimillion dollar deal. If you like talented production mixed with tight Boot Camp gansta rhymes with some creole slang, you'll want to pick up this CD, so when C-LOC and the CONCENTRATION CAMP blow up, you'll have pride in telling your friends that you've been listening to C-LOC since his underground days. No need to worry. If you noticed the amount of success and the number of hits that other Louisiana rappers have had, then you can be sure that C-LOC and his CAMP will bring you the same ear drum shattering, hard knock flows that are as good as a pot of granma's Seafood Gumbo. Look out for the SWAMP. Ya Heard Me?

This is one of my three favorite rap albums of all time. The other two are Brotha Lynch "Season of da Siccness" and MC Eiht "We Come Strapped." If those albums float your boat, this will sail your ship or whatever. Yeah, that's dumb, but you get the idea. If you love the hardcore brutality of rap in its prime years (1993-1998), this album is for you.
