4.0 out of 5 stars Old School is back, May 2, 2009
This review is from: Whatever Gets You Off (Audio CD)
In the dying years of the Skid Row/Motley Crue Era of glam rock, semi heavy metal I watched in horror as many bands jumped on the bandwagon of the latest genre. This band along with others (Crooked X) are bringing back dirty, hard hitting rock. You can hear the words, the message is clear and us old heads that are tiring of the new heavy metal growling are in awe of the next generation not only taking up the torch, but rocking as hard as any band that represented this genre of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome sleazy rock, April 15, 2009
By
This review is from: Whatever Gets You Off (Audio CD)
If you're someone who enjoys bands like Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Buckcherry or AC/DC you should love this album. It's sleazy and catchy and you'll be banging your head throughout, and there is even a good ballad, "Apologize". This is an up and coming band that I think will be capturing people's attention after this release.

Sleazy guitar driven rock-n-roll massacre. Rock it loud and with the windows down. Rock is alive and well. Move over pretty boy pop... the Last Vegas are here to steal your pretty young ones. Long live the rockers and rollers!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rock n' Roll Revival, October 16, 2009
This review is from: Whatever Gets You Off (Audio CD)
2009's Whatever Gets You Off is the third album from hard rockers The Last Vegas, and looks to be the one that breaks through and gives the band the wider audience their music deserves. How do you describe a band like this? Classic rock makes them sound like anything but the brash young upstarts they are, and tags like glam rock and hair metal don't fit either. How about this - they're a rock n' roll band that remembers how to have fun.

The Last Vegas has a great, old school rock sound that draws from AC/DC and Aerosmith as well as Motley Crue and Guns n' Roses. They're the band that tears down the local club with riotous songs about drinking and debauchery and then steals the girlfriends of the sensitive "rock" guys trying to be the next Coldplay. Song titles like "High Class Trash", "Dirty Things You Do" and "Cherry Red" tell you exactly what to expect from Whatever Gets You Off, and if those sound good to you, you're in good company. Oh, and the soulful slow song "Apologize" could have come directly from a Tesla record. Beautiful.

You wouldn't know it from the inane stuff that gets played on mainstream rock radio, but this is a great time to be a rock n' roll fan. Bands like Airbourne, Charm City Devils and The Last Vegas (not to mention the European bands Hardcore Superstar, Crashdiet and the Poodles) are flying the hard rock flag that was dropped when grunge took over, and they're doing it with great style and energy. If you like your rock fun, you'll want to check out Whatever Gets You Off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks!, August 5, 2009
This review is from: Whatever Gets You Off (Audio CD)
Just short and sweet. I happen to be a man that likes his music to be hard rock heavy, and it is getting harder and harder to find a band that just wants to get sleazy and Rock and Roll. These guys aren't afraid of a little dirt. As I said, Thanks!

I don't understand how great rock bands like The Last Vegas, Burn Halo, Hardcore Superstar, etc. are not getting any airplay or recognition. Everything you hear on the radio has to sound like Nickelback, I guess. These guys play a perfect mix of sleazy, groovy hard rock that harkens back to the 80's without sounding dated. A mix between Buckcherry and Guns N Roses. I can find no faults with this cd and enjoy it a lot.

I do have to say that this release is a lot better than their prior releases. I think they got some advice and guidance on their sound and their look from Nikki Sixx (since they are on his label). Definitely the right moves were made. It's been awhile since this was released, hopefully they release something else soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Updated rawk (look ma, no spandex!), September 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Whatever Gets You Off (Audio CD)
I've just reviewed the Asphalt Valentine album and I've gotta say that these guys are quaffing from the same trough. Straight up rawk rock without the embarrassing spandex of yesteryear these chaps have here produced a high octane slice of busy hard rock. To compare oranges to oranges, I'd have to say that this album is a touch more individual and certainly more in possession of a certain swagger that allows this sort of essentially non artistic art to put out its hand for your money.

Blasting out of the blocks with title cut Whatever Gets You Off and following it up with I'm Bad this band sets out it's stall nicely and the songs all scurry along with nary a let. This is the sort of album you can throw on in the background when some buddies are over or crank when you are cruising down the highway. I guess these guys lucked out due to the presence of Nikki Sixx on production duties (along with the band, Marti Frederiksen and DJ Ashba) and that any seeming endorsement of that nature is probably mana from heaven for a band such as this.

Musically everything is louder than everything else, the percussive attack is strong and everything is bright and shiny with plenty of melodies and hooks to have you shamelessly nodding your head to. The vocals of the amusingly monikered Chad Cherry are standouts, it's the old story of the difference between a great singer and a great frontman. On the evidence of this release he is probably in the latter category but there is certainly nothing wrong with that and his showmanship is a big plus for this album.

If pushed I'd say this is the more personable album between this and Asphalt Valentines Strip Rock Roll, the latter release being a solid four while the better melodies here push this up to 5 - if you are in the mood for this kind of thing. Not for Goths to listen to while they hang out in the local graveyard as there is just too much zest for life here!
