Sad, beautiful, magnificent,
This review is from: Whatever You Love You Are (Audio CD)
A friend of mine put me on to the Dirty Three a few years ago when he described the first time he heard 'Indian Love Song'. He was driving at the time and when the tune came on the radio he had to stop the car and listen - the song had such an immediate impact on him. Until this album I hadn't heard any better piece of music from the Dirty Three (Although they have come mighty close on subsequent albums). Now we have 'Some Summers They Drop Like Flies' - The most beautiful, sad but ultimately magnificent piece of music you will ever hear...and the rest of the album does not disappoint after such a superb beginning.BUY THIS ALBUM

In a word: WOW!,
This review is from: Whatever You Love You Are (Audio CD)
Incredible! I first came across this band a few years back when (somewhere) I heard parts of "Horse Stories". I was intriegued, but hesistated on buying that album then because I wasn't sure it was really "my kind of music." Wow, BAD move on my part! I saw this CD recently and decided to give it a chance and it BLEW ME AWAY! From the first time the violin came in on the opening track I was mesmerised! The crashing end to "I Offered It Up..." is one of the most staggering moments on ANY album I've EVER heard! The whole record, actually, is incredible! I've since bought "Ocean Songs", which is equally amazing, if not moreso. I can't think of another band that sounds like this. The arrangement is so basic, so organic...it feels familiar, somehow, yet totally unlike ANYTHING I've ever heard before. I recommend this band to anyone, no matter what kind of music you normally listen to. Approach this music with an open mind and you will be rewarded beyond your wildest dreams.

For a trio, the Dirty Three make one hell of a wonderful racket. Shambolic - emotional - lyrical - human - yearning - moving - romantic - (these words are popping out as I listen to this CD). This is not essentially different from their other albums; the format is limiting and they have their style, of course, but I don't know of anyone else who sounds anything like them. As a result, all the D3 CD's get their fair share of time at my place. They're all excellent and highly recommended, especially if you like some emotion in your music.
