5.0 out of 5 stars Sad, beautiful, magnificent

3.0 out of 5 stars Light but still deep

The group's particular brand of trio fury suffers from too much downtime here in between intense statements of purpose.

A friend of mine put me on to the Dirty Three a few years ago when he described the first time he heard 'Indian Love Song'. He was driving at the time and when the tune came on the radio he had to stop the car and listen - the song had such an immediate impact on him. Until this album I hadn't heard any better piece of music from the Dirty Three (Although they have come mighty close on subsequent albums). Now we have 'Some Summers They Drop Like Flies' - The most beautiful, sad but ultimately magnificent piece of music you will ever hear...and the rest of the album does not disappoint after such a superb beginning.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a word: WOW!, July 9, 2000
This review is from: Whatever You Love You Are (Audio CD)
Incredible! I first came across this band a few years back when (somewhere) I heard parts of "Horse Stories". I was intriegued, but hesistated on buying that album then because I wasn't sure it was really "my kind of music." Wow, BAD move on my part! I saw this CD recently and decided to give it a chance and it BLEW ME AWAY! From the first time the violin came in on the opening track I was mesmerised! The crashing end to "I Offered It Up..." is one of the most staggering moments on ANY album I've EVER heard! The whole record, actually, is incredible! I've since bought "Ocean Songs", which is equally amazing, if not moreso. I can't think of another band that sounds like this. The arrangement is so basic, so organic...it feels familiar, somehow, yet totally unlike ANYTHING I've ever heard before. I recommend this band to anyone, no matter what kind of music you normally listen to. Approach this music with an open mind and you will be rewarded beyond your wildest dreams.

For a trio, the Dirty Three make one hell of a wonderful racket. Shambolic - emotional - lyrical - human - yearning - moving - romantic - (these words are popping out as I listen to this CD). This is not essentially different from their other albums; the format is limiting and they have their style, of course, but I don't know of anyone else who sounds anything like them. As a result, all the D3 CD's get their fair share of time at my place. They're all excellent and highly recommended, especially if you like some emotion in your music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but somewhat less approachable than Horse Stories, November 18, 2001
This review is from: Whatever You Love You Are (Audio CD)
Superb string sounds -- listen to it on a better stereo and you'll discover the most amazing harmonics and string noise.

There's something more heavy or gritty about this disk compared to other Dirty Three work. Horse Stories is an easier albulm to start with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully haunting music, April 17, 2000
This review is from: Whatever You Love You Are (Audio CD)
This latest Cd, like all of their previous works, distinguishes the Dirty Three once again as one of the best bands that no one has heard of. This CD alone should grab anyone's attention by its shear emotion alone and hold them in. You cannot help but be moved by their music. This CD, like all of their others cannot help but be impressive to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love at first site..., December 11, 2002

This record has the unfortunate distinction of being one that I liked way too much on first playing. Most of The Dirty Three's output has to slowly grow on me in order to deepen my appreciation for it but this one hit me as a grand, beautiful miasma of sound immediately and as a perhaps bizzare result it doesn't get as much play as my other D3 disks.

That isn't to say that it isn't a wonderful record and the Dirty Three are without a doubt one of my favorite bands of all time. This record lacks the violence of "Horse Stories" and the spiritual confusion of "Ocean Songs". These may be good things for the future but it was the violence and the confusion that made their other records so enjoyable. Keep in mind when I first bought this one I fell in love with it.

Let me put it this way, this may be one of the greatest albums of all time it's just isn't (in my opinion) the greatest Dirty Three record of all time.

I can't wait for their next album!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I { heart } this record, May 17, 2000
This review is from: Whatever You Love You Are (Audio CD)
There really isn't much to be said about Dirty Three; it's just a guitar, a violin, and a drum kit. Yet somehow this fairly pedestrian line-up is the source of some of the most sober and moving music being written today. "Whatever You Love..." contains six instrumental gems to drive past thunderstorms and cornfields on winding country roads to, and at least one of them is the most emotional and heart-pounding song I've ever heard.

This is probably the best record I'll hear this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars What The Heck Is This? I Love It!, March 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Whatever You Love You Are (Audio CD)
This music is written by insane people, for insane people. Listen to it and you too will be driven insane. If this is the music they make in Australia, I'm packing my bags right now. I can't decide what I like better, the paintings by the guitarist or the music! This is genre defying stuff that takes you places. It is anything but rock, which many may take it for. It is softly beautiful and shockingly bold in its seemingly random drifting and jamming. The intensity the music reaches makes you stop in your tracks to catch your breath. They are onto something, or, maybe just on something. Keep it coming, boys!

I Do not think Whatever you love, you are, sounded like Ocean Songs. Ocean Songs was also a great record, but this one had more feeling to it. The way that each song sounded was incredible. Its the kind of music that just touches you. If you enjoy the Japancakes or cat power you would like this.
