I live in IL, but growing up in Atlanta, whenever we had first-time visitors in town, there was one place we had to take them to experience--the Varsity! Whenever I go back to visit, I always try to make a point of stopping in for lunch at preferrably the big one downtown, if not one of the smaller suburban ones. While the lines can be long, they move you through efficiently, and the food's always fresh, and reasonably priced! My standard meal--double burger, large fries, large Coke, and fried peach pie!

It's been called various things over the years, like "a grease pit", but it's still a slice of home, an Atlanta institution! This book has rare photographs, interesting tidbits on how the Varsity "grew up" along with its hometown Atlanta, and heartwarming stories on what the Varsity means to everyday folks, celebrities, and the hard-working employees (among them carhop Nipsey Russell, the late comedian/game show panelist). Founder Frank Gordy sounded like a good man to work for--when asked what he did with the leftovers, he said "We don't have any"!

A great addition to the coffee table book collection for anyone from Atlanta or Georgia!

My first rememberance of The Varsity was in 1948. My parents took us on the newly created expressway one Sunday afternoon. We stopped in at The Varsity for an icecream. My sister remembers Flossie Mae and I am more familiar with the Varsity in Athens on Broad St. From 1959 to 1965, it was the meeting site for my fraternity brothers after a night of partying. Always a couple of chili dogs, rings and orange drink was the typical order. Over the next 30 years I visited the Varsity when in town. The book is an accurate portrayal of the Varsity and what it meant to all the folks that visited it. As much is the history of the Varsity is my history as well. It is well written and very descriptive in how Mr. Gordy and his family built this southern institution. Thanks for the memories and I'll meet you at the Varsity next time in town. Buy the book and enjoy it.

My husband has been asking me to get him this book for birthday or christmas and I had no luck in all the popular book stores around. When I found it at Amazon I was amazed and also with the speedy reply and shipment I was impressed. He loves (my husband) the book and finds all the things he remembers from his childhood to this date. I am not a native Atlantan but gets the urge to stop at the Varsity occasionly. I will further log on to more of the classics.
