Book Description

August 26, 2003
A stunningly innovative visual edition of this award-winning book---designed to appeal to spiritual seekers and visually oriented readers. Philip Yancey's What's So Amazing About Grace? won the Book of the Year Award in 1998 and has sold over one million copies since it was first published in 1997. Now this innovative visual edition uses the life-transforming content of Yancey's message and makes it accessible to a whole new audience. This visually rich book takes portions of the text of the original book and illustrates the themes and messages with provocative full-color photography and graphic illustrations. The creators of this visual edition designed it with the needs of contemporary postmodern readers in mind: both spiritual seekers and the younger, more visually oriented readers of today's culture. By combining Yancey's engaging style with striking images that enhance and illuminate the message, this unique book enables readers to 'experience grace' as they interact with the powerfully imaginative format. With deep personal honesty Yancey paints true portraits of grace's life-changing power as he searches for its presence in his own life and the life of the church. He explores grace---God's love for the undeserving---while challenging Christians to become living answers to a world that desperately wants to know: What's so amazing about grace?

More About the Author

I worked for 10 years as an Editor and then Publisher for Campus Life magazine. There I learned journalistic skills (there's no tougher audience than teenagers), but every year it seemed I wrote fewer and fewer words. In 1980 my wife Janet and I moved to downtown Chicago where I began a career as a freelance writer. (She has worked as a social worker and hospice chaplain--which gives me plenty of material to write about!) We lived there until 1992, when we moved to the foothills of Colorado. I've written around 20 books, most of them still in print, thankfully. Three of them I coauthored with Dr. Paul Brand, who influenced me more than any single person. My own favorites are "Soul Survivor" and "Reaching for the Invisible God" because both of them forced me to dig deep and get personal. I'm a pilgrim, still "in recovery" from a bad church upbringing, searching for a faith that makes its followers larger and not smaller. I feel overwhelming gratitude that I can make a living writing about the questions that interest me.

Famous criminal trials, international disasters, the world wars, heros and villans we all know of, bums on the street--
what does grace really mean today? What does it looks like? This book answers those questions in the most humble and powerful ways. It is so visually, intellectually, and emotionally stimulating that you can't put it down.

Yancey puts the core message of the Bible into today's context not by droning on philosophically -- but by unassumingly presenting examples of grace today. God's grace as well as interpersonal grace.

I have no problem giving this book to anyone interested in or partaking in God's grace. It is truly fantastic literature.

I've never read the full version of this book, but this one caught my eye because of the beautiful graphic design as I flipped through it (being a desinger myself). I was pleased to find that the book was more than just a nicely designed book -- it was one of the best expositions on grace I have read. If you have a pagan friend, this would be a great book to give as a gift.

I'm really not the type of person who enjoys reading or looking at visual editions of books. I love to read and usually would rather read the original book and all it's words than look at something that's sort of the book, but not really. Don't get me wrong, I like pictures and illustrations really help me learn concepts better, but I prefer original texts to an inferior copy. I can't say that about WHAT'S SO AMAZING ABOUT GRACE? THE VISUAL EDITION. This book captures the spirit of Yancey's book to a tee and instead of being a cheap rip-off, feels and even reads more like a companion. Beautiful pictures, powerful stories, well planned illustrations, and thought-provoking quotations are all woven together to display the power, mystery, and love of God's grace. I normally wouldn't recommend a book like this at all. However, this book is so well put together that I recommend this book to just about anyone.
