Book Description

7 and up
Computers are amazing machines. But what can they actually do? Nothing without the right computer programs.

In What's A Computer Program? today's youngest computer enthusiasts learn the basics of software and how applications can turn these modern marvels into a paint box, calculator, musical instrument, story machine, and more. This book is a simple introduction to computer programs ans applications and related vocabulary.

The direct writing style is always in sync with the way children think. Each concept is made solid, lively and understandable. The full color illustrations are cheerful, mischievous and funny. Despite the techno subject matter, the books use generous amounts of white space to give all the information plenty of elbow room. The images, made up of great splashes of brilliant color and odd shapes, have lots of child appeal.

The book includes tips for working with computer programs and interesting technological trivia for both kids and adults. An imaginative cast of characters, The Mouse Family, entertainingly guide the child reader through all the information contained in the book. There's a Glossary/Index in the back of the book and a fun "mousetail" bookmark sewn into the binding of the book. .

This hard cover, dust jacketed book is 8.5" by 11" and is brightly colored throughout. It's the perfect gift for children and grandchildren four to seven years old.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?These unattractive picture books explain basic computer concepts. Each page includes only three or four lines of text. Definitions of words and concepts are easy to understand. Important terms are printed in color and included in a glossary/index at the end of each book. Difficult-to-read message boxes appear in the corners of some pages. Toby also incorporates a different story about the Mouse Family and their computer experiences into each book. The main drawback here is the artwork. The cartoon drawings appear to be computer generated and have a gray cast, making them visually unappealing. Overall, this is a mediocre set. Spend your money elsewhere.?Kathleen A.
