5.0 out of 5 stars One of the better kids cookbooks
This fun cookbook for kids is well designed and really useful. Each of the 27 recipes takes up a page spread. On one side is the recipe, on the other a full-page color photo of the food. Better still, the book has a hidden spiral binding, so it lies flat on a kitchen counter. Focused mainly on French cuisine, the recipes range from easy to "master chef" and are divided...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Curmudgeon Weighs In
I don't know what you've heard, but just to clarify: this cookbook has ONE recipe by Thomas Keller -- it is NOT a whole BOOK of recipes by Thomas Keller. In fact, the recipes are standard children's-cookbook fare: grilled cheese, pizzas decorated to look like animals, etc. Having said that, though, it's a pretty good version of a kid's cookbook. The French influence...

This fun cookbook for kids is well designed and really useful. Each of the 27 recipes takes up a page spread. On one side is the recipe, on the other a full-page color photo of the food. Better still, the book has a hidden spiral binding, so it lies flat on a kitchen counter. Focused mainly on French cuisine, the recipes range from easy to "master chef" and are divided into five sections: breakfast; lunch; breads, salads and soups; dinner; and desserts. Each includes an extra tip, such as how to flip a crepe or what bread works best for French toast.

Here are the recipes:

BREAKFAST
* Colette's Crepes
* Ooh La La French Toast
* Remy's Famous Omelets
* French Breakfast Muffins

LUNCH
* Gusteau's Grilled Cheese
* Croque Monsieur
* Quiche Lorraine
* Easy Faux Escargots (using gherkin pickles for snails, tortilla-wrap slices for shells)
* Crazy Cheese Straws
* Cheese Fondue

BREADS, SOUPS AND SALADS
* A Classic Baguette
* Vichyssoise
* Chef's Salad
* Salad Nicoise
* Dijon Vinaigrette

DINNER
* Gusteau's Ratatouille
* Linguini Alfredo with Peas
* C'est Magnifique Salmon (with lemon and dill sauce)
* Remy's Macaroni and Cheese
* Pizza Rats (the slices use black olives for eyes and noses)
* Oven-Baked French Fries

DESSERTS
* Colette's Apron Cake
* Django's Dirt Cake (a brownie-like cake decorated with gummy bears and plastic rats)
* Cheery Cheesecakes
* Chocolate Bouchons (from California celebrity chef Thomas Keller)
* Chocolate Rats (chocolate-coated apricot bodies with licorice whiskers, peanut-half ears and rolled Starbursts for the tails)
* Eiffel Tower Cookie Sundae (with the tower made from sugar wafers)

With gorgeous photos, cute artwork inspired by the movie "Ratatouille" and a nice mix of serious and silly recipes, this is a cookbook kids could really get into.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best children's cookbook I've seen, September 10, 2007
By
This review is from: What's Cooking?: A Cookbook for Kids (Ratatouille) (Spiral-bound)
REAL recipes for REAL food, all in an easy-to-read, clear and uncluttered format. It's not just a book showing how to make your food into cute animals, or 100 ways to use peanut butter. Food you can serve the whole family, using mature but totally accessible ingrediants such as yeast and potatoes, to make some of the foods you know your kids would love if they'd only give them a try -- like Quiche Lorraine and Linguini Alfredo with Peas. And they'll probably try them if they make them! A fantastic cookbook, for any age cook.

Spiral bound and very easy to use in the kitchen. Wonderful recipes, though all require adult assistance. Beautifully illustrated with color photos. This is not your average kid's PB&J cookbook!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ratatouille Cookbook, March 7, 2008

Wonderful!! My 13-year-old daughter, who has been cooking some for a couple years, has really enjoyed this book. It has some simple recipes for younger kids or complete beginners, plus more complicated ones for older kids. Tasty food, too! The attachment to the movie also makes it fun. Very glad I bought it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for adults and kids!, December 11, 2007

This review is from: What's Cooking?: A Cookbook for Kids (Ratatouille) (Spiral-bound)
This book is great. I originally bought it to make things with my kids because they love this movie, and I LOVE that it's not one of those kids books with just a bunch of crafty recipes in it- they are actually things the whole family will eat. When I want a good idea for lunch and I want something fairly easy I look in this book and both the kids and I will eat it.

I watched the movie and when I saw the cookbook it interested me. Since I am recently retired and my wife is still working, I decided that this book might get me started on some simple cooking. The recipes are pretty simple and are easy to understand. A few are more involved, but most are easy and fun. The spiral bound book makes it easy to read or lay flat on the counter. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting a good start for cooking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun cookbook for the whole family, July 23, 2008
I gave this cookbook to my sister-in-law who has 2 daughters 6 and 12. The whole family, even dad, has made something from the cookbook, and they rave about the food that comes out of it. They are particularly fond of the breads and pastries. Anyone can cook! Enjoy!

This is a cute cookbook for kids. There are some neat ideas, including the "rat face pizza" and the dirt cake, with a plastic rat, of course! I haven't tried any recipes yet but I am looking forward to making them with my niece. If you liked the movie and like to cook, I would recommend this cookbook!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook! Glad I purchased., August 23, 2010

This review is from: What's Cooking?: A Cookbook for Kids (Ratatouille) (Spiral-bound)
I initially purchased this cookbook because my 5-year-old son, who loves the move Ratatouille, wanted me to make the "famous" ratatouillle dish for him. I have to confess that I initially had pretty low expectations for what would be included in this cookbook, and for how much I would actually use it, but I'm happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised. There are a lot of great recipes in this cookbook, and each one is very easy to make. Even better, though, is the fact that my son opens the cookbook daily to choose something new that he would like to make, and I can hardly put into words how much fun it is to cook together in the kitchen. My son is also an extremely picky eater, and this cookbook has encouraged him to want to try new things. It doesn't get much better than that!!
