Editorial Reviews

For the first time ever, this double CD set collects the entire catalogue of The Missionaries late-Eighties output. Twenty-two tracks that showcase the great Philadelphia-area band's raw rock-and-roll sound. Along the way, the boys venture into the realms of the ethereal ("Dream";"Love To Lie"), the funky ("Mr. Cooper";"Summer On My Mind"), and the downright funny ("Love Ostrich";"Shindig"). While many of the songs explore the lyrical and musical territory first mined by the likes of the Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop, and the New York Dolls, The Missionaries are careful not to take themselves too seriously. Have fun deciphering the real demons of "It's Hell" and "Summer On My Mind" while enjoying bone-crushing odes to the unlikely duo of Joan Jett ("Lady Dynamite") and "Martin Sheen." Anyone who has ever been lucky enough to catch these guys live onstage—where they truly shine—will be more than happy to have these long-unavailable staples of The Missionaries' set ! collected in one place. There's nothing like the sound of two guitars, a bass, and drums punching out rock and roll from the gutters, garages, bars, and basements where these guys learned it. And a lot of fun to boot.

Kudos to the Missionaries for putting this collection together. Great songs, great playing, great passion. Key lead guitar work by Tom Valentine. Count me in!

5.0 out of 5 stars The long lost art of rock-and-roll., April 11, 2001

Anymore, it seems that the word rock-and-roll is used to encapsulate every type of music from pop to alternative to folk to fill-in-the-blank. But every so often a band comes along and reminds people of what Chuck Berry was really after when he melded uptempo blues tunes together and derived the pure element of rock-and-roll. Through the years bands like the Stones, the Ramones, the Stooges, and the Replacements have played this role of the reminder. And if anyone lived around Philadelphia in the late Eighties, The Missionaries more than fulfilled the original promise and intent of rock-and-roll. Although the self-production on this CD doesn't give these songs the absolute due they deserve, the tunes speak for themselves. This band wasn't trying to save the world or free mankind. The Missionaries simply played loud, fast, and fun rock-and-roll. And forgive me if I'm sounding like one of those music critic wannabe know-it-alls who grace these reviews-because that would be a disservice to this important but largely ignored band. So to put it more succinctly, if you've never been able to catch The Missionaries live, then buy (or steal) this CD, open wide the windows, turn up the volume, and be reminded of what rock-and-roll was always about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Great Stuff, April 7, 2009
This review is from: What's The Damage, Nick Nack? (Audio CD)
Fortunate for me, I had the opportunity to see this band live, many times! Having these great tunes at my finger tips again, words can not to be written to describe how cool this is. I once remember Jim telling me that Love Ostrich was being played on local radio and I for one was hopeful these guys would make it. They truly did! Great tunes, they live on and still make folks feel good. What a great band that will live on in my mind. You must pick up this CD! I often wondered if I had any influence on Mr Cooper? And love to hear Big Fat Rollie Mama once again?
Enjoy.
