4.0 out of 5 stars What's Inside?
What's inside is a delightful pop up book for preschoolers or babies. My children thoroughly enjoyed seeing "What's inside" each page. This book gave them a peek inside many objects and allowed them to get a better understanding of pregancy and birth in terms they can understand.

It invoked laughter and questions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great
I got this because my toddler loves lift-the-flap books but this one is just not very good and one of his least-read books. There are many better books on the market to help kids prepare for the birth of a sibling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Explains the concept of a new baby in mommy's tummy!, August 5, 2002
This review is from: What's Inside? (Hardcover)
Very young children cannot grasp the concept of a baby being in their mommy's tummy. Well, wouldn't you have questions at that age too? They want to know why they can't take it out and play with it!

The book, "What's Inside?" by Jeanne AshBe, does a good job of answering a young child's questions. It first describes a few things that can be opened up, and what will be found inside. Then it describes things that can be opened up, but aren't meant to be opened. It also shows what you might find inside if you do try and open the item. Lastly, there are illustrations of a mommy's pregnant belly, showing how the baby is growing inside. The last image is that of a baby in the arms of it's older sibling. So, it's explained that the baby is inside, and comes out in due time :).

MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- it explains the concept of a baby being inside a tummy by first using simple ideas that even the youngest children can understand. There are "child-like" drawn illustrations and lift-the-flaps that are always enjoyable by children of all ages. Young children who are expecting a sibling are sure to enjoy this book!

I disagree with the previous reviewer who was concerned about the page asking "What's inside?" with a teddy bear. Apparently her child isn't curious about what's inside toys - mine sure are, and seeing this page reinforced the "be gentle with your toys" admonishments they receive.

I think the illustrations are cute, basic, and easy to follow. While my oldest was almost three when we bought this book prior to her sister's birth, I think even babies around 18 months would understand this book and enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Son Loves This Book, March 16, 2008
By
This review is from: What's Inside? (Hardcover)
My two-and-a-half year old son loves this book. Though I have not told him about his little brother we're expecting in a few months yet, I think he will understand it better since he's fallen in love with this book.

I also love the book. The art is sweet and calm and not-too-silly. It doesn't show two parents, so it can represent any family in which there is a mother-- single, married, gay or otherwise.

Lovely.

3.0 out of 5 stars What's Inside, March 30, 2005

I write to warn parents that this book includes an image that can be disturbing to young children. One of the images is a teddy bear and when the flap is opened, the author shows a teddy bear ripped open with its stuffing pulled out and its eyes in disarray. The second time my 17-month old saw this image, he said, "No! No!" I am not sure why the author chose to literally disembowel one of most childrens' most cherished possessions, but it can really upset little ones. I ended up covering up the image with a photocopy of the intact teddy bear and writing that there is "lots of love" inside the bear.
