Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- Each of these titles follows a professional at work to show typical daily activities. The doctor, a general practitioner, makes hospital rounds and then has office hours. The nurse works on a hospital pediatric floor. She checks her patients, gives them a bath, their medicine, and plays with them. The female dentist gives a young boy a check-up, explaining about the chair, the tools used, and daily dental care. Doctor explains the education required, but the other two books do not. The texts define unfamiliar words and activities clearly. The utilitarian illustrations are colorful, flat, but represent the action. The "I Can Be A . . ." series (Childrens) explains the various options within specialties and illustrates the work with photographs, making it a better choice. These books are limited, as they show only a small portion of what the professional does. Drescher's Your Doctor, My Doctor (Walker, 1987) gives a clearer picture of what doctors do. Books that describe the dental check-up just as well include My Dentist (Greenwillow, 1975) by Harlow Rockwell or The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist (Random , 1981). --Martha Gordon, South Salem Library, NY
