Ages 5-7. These square, little books introduce two very different habitats by focusing on 10 animals that live in each one. A typical spread features a close-up illustration of the animal on one page, with the facing page presenting a few lines of text describing the creature's most interesting habits and characteristics. Meadow includes the wooly bear caterpillar, spittlebug, firefly, meadowlark, and Eastern mole. Tide Pool looks at animals such as the sea anemone, herring gull, hermit crab, blue mussel, and barnacle. Hunter's handsome watercolor, ink, and colored-pencil pictures gracefully illustrate the animals' characteristics and surroundings. These volumes are not intended for research, but their combination of informative, well-written texts, and attractive illustrations makes them good choices for reading aloud to young children who are interested in nature.
