Book Description

July 5, 2005
Described as "Japan's version of Garfield, Heathcliff, and Krazy Kat all rolled into one," Makoto Kobayashi's What's Michael? combines true-to-life feline behavior every cat-lover (and hater!) will recognize along with off-the-wall trips into the realms of the fantastic (vampires?) and the ridiculous (cat high school?!). Whether unlocking the mysteries of where cats sleep or analyzing the structure of the cat pecking order, the answers always come with loads of laughter!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8.^B The adventures of intrepid manga house cat Michael continue in this assortment of refreshingly witty tales of the cat-human interface. In several of these episodes, Michael deals with his mate, Popo. They have a litter of kittens, one of which grows so quickly that it can't extricate itself from the stereo speaker into which it has crawled for a nap. Then there's Charles, the boss cat with attitude. In one piece of historical farce, the characters drawl with eye-rolling cheesiness, and in a bit of anthropomorphic truth telling, a cat teacher at Meow-Meow High manages to discipline his class right out of his own job. Cat food marketing, a vampire, and the titular sleepless night are also featured in various vignettes. Michael's appeal isn't limited to feline fanciers; it far outstrips the wit of any of his American cartoon cat cousins. Readers older and younger than the target audience will find something to appreciate, too. Francisca Goldsmith

This review is from: What's Michael? Vol. 10: Sleepless Nights (Paperback)

I liked this volume 10 better than volume 9.
But I finished both volumes on the day I received them in the mail and finished it too fast in one sitting. It's that good & funny and is guaranteed to warm your feline loving heart.

Volume 9 was ok but my least favorite out of 8 older volumes I own.
I am happy to report, volume 10: Sleepless Nights is now one of my favorites. It has cute & clever cats, simple but ingenious plots and endearing dialogue.

I love cats and more than a few have turned my home into a cathouse ;-)

I've been hooked ever since the cover of What's Michael Volume 6: A Hard Day's Life caught my eye at the Library. I sat there and read the entire volume then went home and ordered it. If you love cats and know their catty ways, then you'll "get" this entire series just as fast as I did.

What's Michael series books are the only ones that are on my pre-order list. I only wish the first few volumes weren't so hard to find or so costly.

Dark horse or whoever the publisher is should reissue the rare first & second volumes.

Ironically, my very first cat was named Michael. It must've been Karma because I am in love with the "What's Michael" series.
