PreSchool-Grade 2-Well written, with very attractive color drawings and endpapers, these introductions give brief descriptions of the physical features and behavior of each animal. Their small size and informative content will make them useful for nature field trips with young children. Both titles contain 10 double-page spreads with text on the left and an illustration on the right, each featuring a different creature. The first page frames the question asked in the title, and the last page gives general information about the particular habitat. Pond looks at a variety of insects, a bluegill (sunfish), red-winged blackbird, painted turtle, frog, tadpole, and muskrat. Log features insects and other arthropods, a garter snake, red eft (salamander), and chipmunk. Useful, appealing additions to nature collections.

About the Author

Anne Hunter lives on a farm in Vermont. Since attending Earlham College and graduating from the University of the Arts, she has worked full-time as an illustrator, well-known for her nature illustrations. Hunter has written and illustrated many children’s books, including Possum's Harvest Moon.

These painstakingly detailed, beautiful drawings are serene, pensive, yet light-hearted 3-dimensional renditions of these tiny creatures. The text and illustrations inspire a closer look and sense of wonder for small children and their adult companions. And it fits in your pocket!

Small book,too small for reading at circle time to group of children. Hardback cover is approx. 5"x5" with pictures inside much smaller. This would be a nice book for one on one or independent reading, or leaving in science area, it has a lot of good information.
