What's Real - keepin it real,
By Richie T "read-a-holic" (Bermuda) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What's Real (Paperback)
This book was quite enjoyable. What's Real couldn't top YO YO love but I still enjoyed it. The special twist at the end was the best - it was totally unexpected. What's Real kept you thinking about your own relationships. Daaimah kept it real with this book, page by page reality. I couldn't put the book down. I like the way one of the characters stood by her man - no matter what. The other character was very confused, but in the end got herself together. This book could use a sequel.

I have been a fan of Daaimah S Poole since I read "Yo-Yo Love" and "Got a Man", her latest release "What's Real" does not disappoint. This is the story of 3 friends: Janelle, Natalie, and Tanya. The girls decide to take a trip to Miami for some much needed rest and relaxation. Natalie is a stay-at-home mom who feels overwhelmed and unappreciated. When she sneaks off to be with her friends, it sets off a chain of events that will forever change her life. Janelle works as an assistant manager at a local department store, she feels overworked and underpaid. Her family has moved into her one bedroom apartment and soon she feels overcrowded. In Miami, she meets the man of her dreams and leaves everything behind to be with him but she quickly learns that it's not all it seems. Tanya, a high-school dropout with 2 children living with her grandmother, feels abandoned by her mother and after the love of her life was killed, she gave up on love. She's just looking for a good time and a man with deep pockets. After an unexpected person comes back into her life, she realizes she must either make changes in her life or continue on the path to self-destruction. The trip to Miami changes their lives in ways that they never imagined. What's Real is an entertaining, fast-paced read with some unexpected twists. I give this book 4 stars. I would have actually given this book 3.5 stars. It was okay, but I guess I was looking for more things going on, drama. I just couldnt find all the characters believable. It is worth the read, because the ending is wonderful.

Daaimah did an excellent job with "What's Real", I enjoyed the entire storyline. From the introduction to each of the three main characters and the drama in their lives. She developed enough real issues from the young golddigger, the single mom that's still caught up in the game, the the unappreciated mom and wife to the young strong single woman that's trying to save the world. She worked each scene eloquently with realistic reactions, situations, and consequences.
Great job Ms. Poole!

Me and my friends are going to Miami,
By College Student (Jackson, Mississippi) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What's Real (Paperback)
This book was cute and true about three friends Janelle, Tanya and Natalie who take a trip together to Miami. Janelle has it all together, Tanya is the hoochie, and Natalie is the lonely housewife. They all have their problems and they all help each other with them like true friends do. This book was a picture of me and my friends I could really relate.

This IS Real!!!,

To be honest I was a little skeptical about this book. The cover looks like a teenage novel. But then again like the saying goes 'you can't judge a book by its cover'.
Three friends Janelle, Tanya and Natalie get together to go on a quick get away vacation to Miami. Janelle has her stuff together...she has her own apartment, she is an assistant manager at a retail store but she has the burden of having her mother and her brothers living with her. Tanya is the hoochie out of the friends. She only deals with men that give her money. She doesn't have a job and she has 3 kids. Her Mom-Mom is bascially taking care of her children while she is out doing her thing. Nothing seems to go right in her life. She has a mother who is a crack head and was in and out of her life. Natalie is the one that has a husband and a baby. She is the ultimite housewife. She takes care of the baby, cleans the house and cooks meals for her husband. Her husband is a mechanic during the day and a big baby at night. He can't do anything for himself or his child. All Natalie is doing is trying to get a little time to herself so she can have some type of sanity. Janelle, Tanya and Natalie take their trip to Miami and have fun in the sun. But this trip to Miami changes their lives forever. All three of the women face tragedy and heartache and hope for happiness in the end. I thought this book was awesome and it kept me on my toes. I would stay up late to read this book and see what was going to happen next. I think the reason why I liked this book so much was because it reminded me of the friendship that I have with my 2 best friends. Even though the situations aren't exactly the same in a way it does compare. I think what makes good friendships is the fact that each person should be different and come from different situations. In a way it balances it out. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Daaimah Poole's previous books and I also recommend it to the new comers. I think that anyone can relate to this book because out of Janelle, Tanya and Natalie you have to find a couple of characteristics that you and your friends have.

I just finished "What's Real" and it was off the hook! The characters and situations are very realistic. The chick Tanya I could not stand in the beginning, but towards the end, she changed for the better. I loved this book. Good job Daaimah! I can't wait for her next novel!

I'm going to Miami with my friends and I hope I meet a rapper and a NFL player. But, seriously DSP did the damnthing. I really enjoyed this read. I read it in two days and it was like 300 pages, but it was that good. I recommend this book and her first book Yo Yo Love.
