3.0 out of 5 stars Holding back review
This book is designed for the casual reader, who will not take the time to wade through academically oriented material which says essentially the same thing. Ideas concerning personal responsibility and self- motivation are expressed well, and Burton's writing style is very "readable."
All in all, a helpful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars What is Really Holding You Back is a Phenomenal Read, January 15, 2006
This review is from: What's Really Holding You Back?: Closing the Gap Between Where You Are and Where You Want to Be (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed What is Really Holding You Back. This book is not only thought provoking, practical, and easy to read it is simply life changing. If you are not ready to go to the next level in your life than do not read this book. After reading this book I made several crucial positive changes in my life and I am seeing the benefits immediately. Valorie has a writing style that causes introspection and ultimately positive action. I have read hundreds of books on motivation and self-help such as "Failing Forward" by John C. Maxwell, "The Assignment" by Mike Murdock, "Awaken The Giant Within" by Anthony Robbins, and more. Valorie's book is one of my top ten favorite of all time. Why? Because she knows what she is writing about, she cares about the reader, and her insights Work! This is a must read and I encourage you to buy several copies for those you care about!

I purchased a very popular "find your purpose" book earlier in the year, after completing 38 of the 40 chapters I was no closer to finding my purpose than when I began.

I stumbled upon Ms. Burton's site, through Black America Web, and after perusing her site and signing up for the e-newsletter, I purchased this book. From the first chapter I experienced all kinds of breakthrough. I purchased more and gave them to my friends and now we have a group that gets together every week to fellowship about the book.

This book couples references from the bible to help understand what is going on in our lives. At first I was wary of that but it makes sense in this book. The promary focis of this book and the reason why I read it is about being stuck in your life and getting unstuck in your life. It shows examples of what to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars To the point, December 19, 2007

This review is from: What's Really Holding You Back?: Closing the Gap Between Where You Are and Where You Want to Be (Paperback)
This book tells you what you need to hear and sometimes what you don't want to hear. The author touches on some of the negative points that lead to failure that we all do. And she teaches you how to overcome them through exercises. I saw one of the reviews stating it says the same thing as the more detailed academic books. But reading those hefty books are not always necessary. In fact they tend to water down the issue with a lot of psychotherapy "mumbo-jumbo" that looses the average reader very quickly.

The author has explained the facts of how to succeed in life in a way for everyone to understand. And my personal favorite are her references to the bible. Not only do you get a jolt of energy to succeed but she gives you a verse in the bible that confirms Gods word for you to succeed in that area.

This was a pleasant read that really made you think. She is very insightful. This is a book that can be read over and over again.

Great job Valorie.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's REALLY holding you back... Really!, October 9, 2009
This review is from: What's Really Holding You Back?: Closing the Gap Between Where You Are and Where You Want to Be (Paperback)
To simply say what's holding you back is a casual question that you give a casual answer to. I believe that in this writing Valorie asked the question "What's really.." to make the reader think and then followed it up with the questions and excercises to push us into finding the answers.

This is an excellent book for getting you out of your rut and propelling you forward. This book is most effective if you are ready to be honest with yourself and take your time doing so. I bought this book over a year ago and didn't actually complete it until this year. It is definitely a worthwhile addition to my personal library!! I encourage you to try it for yourself!!

Valorie Burton has what I would call *the perfect* writing style to convey what you need to know about taking every area of your life to the highest levels. The chapters are very short and so directly to the point so that you will not be lost in information. She speaks to you as if you are a close friend, and it is very easy to see that she genuinley cares for the people who read her books. In using her own gifts that she openly acknowledges are God given, she is able to truly inspire you to be unafraid to pursue the purpose in life that God has chosen for you.
I highly recommend this book to people who would like to move through any obstacles in any area of their life. Valorie will help you understand that the fear you have that is holding you back is: (1) actually devoid of power over you and (2) can be pretty simple to overcome with God and a plan! I have personally read the whole book through once, and am now actively journaling and doing all of the things that she suggests to do in each chapter. I plan on giving many copies of this book as gifts to my friends and family.
