5.0 out of 5 stars Best Christmas Music in a Decade
Chuck Leavell is known mostly for his supurb work as pianist and keyboardist for the elite artists of the last three decades. Names like The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, The Black Crowes, Bluse Traveler, and so many others have inlisted his tallents. On this disc he not only plays with passion and fire, but the big surprise is how strong his vocals...

3.0 out of 5 stars Christmas with Soul
A blues, R&B and jazz-influenced Christmas CD doesn't come along often. Chuck Leavell's Christmas CD has its rough spots, but overall its a good effort and worth the money.

The best and worst parts of this CD is Chuck himself. Chuck is an excellent arranger and keyboardist. The jazzy instrumental arrangements of Christmas classics shine - this ain't muzak! You can't...

On this disc he not only plays with passion and fire, but the big surprise is how strong his vocals are. His voice ranges from R&B soulful on "Hey Santa" and "Even Santa Gets The Blues" to melodic soothing on the beautiful new standard that he penned, "Bethlehem". This is a MUST for those that don't have it in their collection. We just can't wait for the sequel!! rl

5.0 out of 5 stars Great mix of R&B and traditional classical Christmas songs, December 23, 1998

This CD was given to us with another CD. We did not know if they would be any good or if they were just filler for the box. Chuck Leavell turned out to be a keeper. A wonderful mix of rythym and blues and classical arrangements of traditional Christmas songs. We all love it. Buy it and you won't be sorry.

Glad to see this in re-release and still available. Chuck Leavell put together a mixture of classic R&B Christmas songs alongside instrumental arrangements of Christmas classics. Chuck also wrote Bethlehem for this CD, and it is a wonderful instant classic. Some of the R&B songs don't suit Chuck's voice. He brings in his fellow Stones' band mate Lisa Fischer to help out on one song. But overall the CD is fun and something different than your usual holiday music fare.

The best and worst parts of this CD is Chuck himself. Chuck is an excellent arranger and keyboardist. The jazzy instrumental arrangements of Christmas classics shine - this ain't muzak! You can't help but sit up and take notice.

The worst is Chuck the vocalist. He's never been strong vocally (re: Sea Level). He mangles Merry Christmas Baby, and needs fellow Stones-sidemate Lisa Fischer to rescue Please Come Home for Christmas. On the other hand, Chuck delivers on his self-penned Bethlehem, a new Christmas classic. He also hits the mark with Hey Santa. It's a fun song and Chuck has fun singing it.

Buy this just to put something different in your Christmas CD collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice set of holiday music, August 18, 2007

Leavell is the former leader of Sea Level, former keyboardist for the Allman Brothers (that's his piano you hear on "Jessica") and long time keyboardist for the Rolling Stones. Here he does a set of Christmas songs, mostly less familiar songs. Enjoyable and well done and quite a bit more uptempo than his "Forvever Blue" CD. For when you want something a little different for your holiday listening.

What ? Industry Mucky-mucks listening like a lookout for talent laiden merry-modern-mryth-making that quakes with quality, this artist said it is so. Well media merchandisers please go out and dig up some more like this disc, my YULEtide Chest always seems strangely empty and we all would appreciate more than a small handful of releases each year. With that said, lets take a look in this here bag...hmmm...the joy of creation and the glee in the giving by those who really seem to care.Thankyou!
