About the Author

Barbara Gruener is a counselor and character coach at Westwood-Bales Elementary, a National School of Character. She grew up on a family dairy farm in Wisconsin and credits life on the farm with helping build her strength of character and work ethic during her formative years. Though she'll tell you that she informally started teaching when she was in kindergarten, Barbara has worked a s a teacher and counselor with students across all grades, pre-K through twelfth, for thirty years. During that time, Barbara has always used fun as her invitation to engage, create, discover, learn, and grow with her students. She feels blessed to be able to connect with kids, be a part of their stories, and help them reach their greatest potential. Her boundless energy and passionate enthusiasm have taken her from San Francisco to New Jersey and Wisconsin to Puerto Rico, sharing her message about the importance of shaping hearts and minds for the future with kindness, respect, and care. When she's not working, Barbara likes to knit, bake, read, write, and take long walks. She lives in Friendswood, Texas, with her husband, John, and their three children.

More schools than ever are facing a crisis in education. Just this week, we heard about another school shooting. Schools around the country have implemented character education in an effort to avert the next crisis but it has left teachers scrambling and wondering what to teach and how. Barbara Greuner has created a book that makes it easy to teach character. Using the acronym "SUPERHEROES," Barbara takes you on a journey to not only change your classroom but to change our future. Each chapter is brimming with activities and questions ready for use in your classroom now. I love the cute songs to help remember what each trait means. This book can easily be used with any age of student; I will be using this with my 6th graders this fall. Add this to your must read summer list! You won't want to miss it.

The first time I read “What’s Under Your Cape?”, I did so for pure enjoyment. As a parent of two children who attended a “National School of Character” it was like reliving their school days, and also gaining additional insight into what they had been taught. For my second read, I made great use of my trusty highlighter and now have a book that is more yellow than not! The book outlines major character traits that we want all children to possess, and provides actual activities, songs, games and plans for educators to incorporate into their classrooms in order to develop these skills. Also included is a treasure-trove of book lists focusing on each trait for young readers- what a goldmine!

I believe this book would be very helpful for parents as well and I found several ideas to incorporate at home. As an avid reader of personal development books, I enjoyed this book in that capacity as well and was inspired on a personal level by many of the ideas. One such example is the revelation that having a choice actually has a positive effect on one’s brain chemistry. I won’t spoil the fun, but Mrs. Gruener’s explains it very well, and as a result I vow to give my children, and myself, more choices! I am very thankful that in August when I start the year in my classroom, I will be armed with this book “under my cape”.

What's Under Your Cape? will inspire anyone working with children to feel encouraged and motivated to do a better job. I'm an elementary school counselor who has been turning to Barbara Gruener's blog, The Corner on Character, since the day it hit the web for a daily dose of character inspiration that can't help but make me feel uplifted and determined to do my part to educate my students on what really matters. I've also heard her speak at the national Forum on Character Education where she shared one idea after another, and many that were new to this 30 year veteran of education. I left thinking if only she had a book I could buy! Now she has taken the best of the blog, and added additional content, to make a guidebook for teaching character that any counselor, teacher, parent or caregiver will find authentic and easy to implement into the daily routine. What's Under Your Cape? is a must-have for teachers or counselors and will serve as the boost you may need to jump-start or simply add new ideas to your character education program. Parents will find it equally as inspiring as you realize it's just as important to teach and practice these skills as it is the academic ones you work so hard to help your children master! What's Under Your Cape? makes you want to teach character!

I just finished a year of teaching. For many reasons, I'm tired and in need of a break. But after reading What's Under Your Cape?, there's something vibrating inside of me. I'm looking forward to discovering with a new group of students what's under their capes. Children are naturally drawn to superheroes. I love the way Barbara feeds off that interest to teach the qualities of character that are so important in our future leaders. "Guess what kids? You can be a superhero too!" Barbara so willingly shares her wealth of knowledge in this book and provides her readers with many practical ways to instill the habits of superheroes in their own students. Needless to say, I'll be using this book as a guide on the side throughout this next year and many to come.
