5.0 out of 5 stars One of the bests, October 9, 1999
This review is from: What's the Word (Audio CD)
On the cutting edge between Soul and Smoothjazz this album combines the jewels of both. Professional instruments with a nice black vocal give you the hip. Hope we will hear soon more tunes of JK.

Before i bought this cd, i had only heard one song off the radio. I must tell you, for all you jazz and r&b fans pls don't sleep on this one, it is banging. I can't wait for his next album. It is a mixture of Norman Brown and D'Angelo. If you buy the cd and don't like it I will refund your money, so go out and get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute gem !!, September 13, 2009
This review is from: What's the Word (Audio CD)
At the time of this review this album is 11 years old and I was most fortunate to stumble upon it by chance as part of a collection being sold off. I do not recall any promotion for this album (maybe I missed it back in 1998)and am not aware of any other work by this artist. This is a tragedy of justice as this album is simply first class all the way !!!!

The guitar work is stunningly fresh and interestingly different from the usual 'smooth jazz' guitar sounds. The often intricate guitar passages only serve to compliment the soulful and funky sounds on this CD. Some tracks are purely instrumental and others have soulful and classy vocals. I would recommend this CD to all who groove to smooth jazzy and soulful sounds. Out of hundreds that I own this one sits at the top. High recommended ! It's a shame that there doesn't seem to be any more out there. Where are you JK ?

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, categorized right there with George Benson, February 8, 1999

I recently heard this on Jazz Flavors. It rruly deserves the title 'Off the Hook'. The combination of vocals and music make this a winner. As some of the older jazz musicans retire or move on to somthing different, I'm glad to hear the next generation is just as strong.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine blend of Jazz, Soul, and Pop...with no rap or hip-hop, November 18, 1998

An extraordinary album that cannot miss in your collection !!! The album starts off with rythm, but it is wisely balanced, and you can also find smooth and sexy tunes. J.K. recently played on the "Return of the Headhunters" album and is one of Herbie Hancock's favourite guitarists. Some will inevitably say he sounds like George Benson, but he is young, he sounds great, and this record is not one that will go out of fashion in three months. Highly recommendable.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD can only be categorized as soulful jazz., November 3, 1998

Although JK is new on the scene, this group will never be placed in the category of "Those one hit wonders".

This CD is a wonderful compilation of Jazz and R&B and I mean this is quality music without any sort of hip-hop undertones. I can't seem to stop playing it. From beginning to end this cd satisfies me.

My personal favorites: "Ain't it good to know", "I'm Sorry", "Say Love Say When" and of course the title track "What's the Word". The group is definitely on the right track and headed for big success. Vocalist Robyn Springer with her sultry soulful voice is obviously from a gospel up-bringing. She has such a soulful elegance to her voice and makes you think she is singing to you personally. I can sincerely recommend adding this CD to your collection if you are truly about quality music.
