Editorial Reviews

From the Director

Director Trent Meeks has worked in motion pictures since the 1960's, where he helped produce a famous television show filmed in Florida, "Flipper", and a feature film, "Day of the Dolphin". Trent has worn many hats in the film industry over the years, including writing, directing, producing, editing, and production management. "...Neighbor's Son?" proved to be one of Mr. Meek's greatest challenges, requiring an unwavering vision to see the film through its nine-month shooting schedule. Always working under the tight guidelines of the available budget, Trent constantly pressed for ways to improve the film, managing his cast and crew to the highest levels of quality and productivity. "The results are very rewarding, as this film begins to help the masses of people out there who desperately need what this project can offer understanding and empathy." Trent felt that the premise of depicting hallucinations would be portrayed well through the use of "special effects" that can only be created through the motion picture medium. The viewer would be able to experience these hallucinations and situations first hand, as they view life through the eyes of Clay Moyer, the neighbor's son. Finally, the goal as the director was to create a scientifically responsible film, that would stand the test of time, and break through the stigma surrounding mental illness once and for all.

Product Description

By viewing this film, America's families can identify or rule out the existence of schizophrenia and other mental disorders in their loved ones. Symptoms of mental illness often parallel or accompany those of adolescent alcoholism, drug abuse, and potential suicide risks. We as filmmakers want America's families to stop thinking that it could never happen to them!

The goal of the producers was to overwhelmingly sensitize as many people as possible to the tragedy of schizophrenia, one of the most misunderstood mental disorders. The producers realize that one film cannot be all things to all people, however we feel that "...Neighbor's Son?" clearly and without overdramatization depicts the nightmarish hell all people afflicted with schizophrenia share to some degree. Because many schizophrenics are of a non-violent nature, we as filmmakers felt the need to expose the internal violence and the frustration an afflicted person must feel when surrounded by people unprepared to deal with their illness.

E.V.E. - Educate, Vindicate, Eradicate

Finally, this film was designed to Educate everyone by creating empathy through knowledge, to Vindicate the sufferer by showing them that someone cares and understands, and to Eradicate the stigma surrounding mental illness once and for all. People naturally fear what they don't understand, which is why "What's Wrong With the Neighbor's Son?" is such an important work. Few tasks are more demanding than trying to get inside another person's skin and view life through their eyes. We hope that by having this opportunity, you will realize that your child, loved one, brother, sister, cousin, or neighbor might not be responsible for what is happening to them. Only through education can these people be helped, and the plight of families the world over who are affected by mental illness can finally be overcome.

S.O.S. - Stamp Out Stigma

5.0 out of 5 stars film, December 16, 1999
This review is from: What's Wrong with the Neighbor's Son?: Recognizing Schizophrenia in Your Family [VHS] (VHS Tape)
With Schizophrenia becoming such a hot topic, not to mention the recent study on mental illness in America by the Surgeon General's Office, this movie is just what the doctor ordered. I applaud Amazon.com for providing a quality product such as "What's Wrong with the Neighbor's Son?".
