I wish I had gotten this tool years ago! It has been invaluable to me in my finish work - makes what can be a frustratingly imperfect task real easy - no gaps! And its beatifully made as well - a little piece of ingenious craftsmanship in its own right! If you do stairs often or occasionally, you need this tool.

Having installed stair treads without the stair wizard I know how helpful this tool can be,it is simple to use and very accurate,no longer do you need an extra tread in case you butch one.My only problem would be that our first one had to be retured because it cracked. Overall great tool!

Saved me lots of time on many jobs and paid for its self in one. If you make your money like I do by the job, You've got to get this tool!

it worked well on the set of stairs the home owner was pleased. it also is good for wood shelves, perfect cut every time

This is a beautifully made tool. Takes only a few stair treads or risers to get familiar with it before you start cutting parts that fit right the first time. Good versatility. You will not be able to use this on stairs much under 30" wide which I do run into sometimes in old houses. This tool is worth the money.

This tool does the job very well and is very intuitive. I had perfectly fit riser/tread in 45 mins. This can make for building a set of stairs quickly. The only thing with it is that some of the 'stays' are plastic. I had one break after it fell off the table saw. My fault for dropping it. Next time I use it I will mill up some new ones out of aluminum or a hard wood. Great tool, very useful

this tool is great the sliding dovetail arms are a little sticky but some wax fixes that. I have never done a stair case this fast and tight it is like i was cheating! i advise anyone who builds stairs to buy this tool it will pay for its self in the first 5 steps you do on a stair case. i have made other tools or jigs similar to this but this is by far the best and can be used for other things than stairs like wall to wall closet shelves .

Mr. Wheaton resolved the dilemma with my tool by sending me a replacement part. The part arrived in working order and Mr. Wheaton was understanding about the issue with the tool. Just got the Wheaton Stair wizard. Rarely write reviews but I am blown away by this. The pictures do not do it justice. It is made of oak and what appears to be rosewood. Metal parts are solid. It has plastic contact points for pencil use. The engineering is amazing. It is very easily moved to template position on stair base and when done it folds up into its carefully cushioned case. Movement of parts is like my Father's slide rule... real craftsmanship. Instructions are clear but hardly needed as it's movement is intuitive for anyone with the least mechanical inclination. Screams "made in U.S.A." and it is. I would put this on my coffee table for display but my wife wouldn't approve! Don't know anything about Wheaton tools in California but I thank them.

I'm a retired guy, never a carpenter, but this tool enabled me to put beautiful, custom-fitted risers and steps onto two sets of carpeted stairways. In both cases, our children were putting laminate wood flooring onto both floors of their homes. They wanted their stairs to match. Tore off the carpet, cut off stair leading edges, then used the "Wizard" to create tight fitting risers and stairs. I couldn't believe the fit! Believe me, there are no two risers or stairs with the same angles or dimensions. After gluing oak bull nose to pieces of laminate flooring, I traced the lines from the "Wizard." After cutting on the outside of the traces I used a belt sander to smooth the edges down to the inside of the trace. EACH step fit perfectly. Risers were much easier but the technique of trimming down to the inside of the trace was the same.
