From Publishers Weekly

A bicycle wheel rolls away, pa-da-rump, pa-da-rump, pa-da-rump-pump-pump, in a rhymed text with a simple theme. It bounces, rolls and leaps through each spread, offering noisy rhymes in the background. The wheel goes "Between the pig pens (oink oink oink) / On top of the hens (boink boink boink) . . . . Over paint cans (squirt squirt squirt) / Under paint man (splirt splirt splirt)." The wheel slows as it goes up a hill, then pauses and twirls back down the path, past all the creatures and locations shown in previous spreads, until it thumps back to the bicycle's owner. Hurd's pictures mix collage and paint, as vibrant and out of the ordinary as Dodds's sprightly text, giving the book an appealing exuberance. Toddlers and beginning readers will be delighted by the display of colors and written approximation of sounds. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-- A runaway bicycle wheel bounces away from a boy and embarks on a spirited adventure down a hill and through town. The slight story is told as a rollicking sound poem that is sure to amuse young audiences ("pa-da-rump-pump-pump") and encourage their participation ("Oh no! See it go!"). As the wheel slowly climbs to the top of a new crest, the action and the book turn 90 and the errant wheel makes its way back to the waiting boy. Hurd's vibrant double-page collages literally bound on and off the pages. Reminiscent of Ezra Jack Keats, the simple, graphic cut-out shapes and primary colored dots that mark the wheel's path accent the fresh, lively, and humorous illustrations. A picture book that begs to be read aloud, this one is a visual and auditory delight.
