Amazon.com Review

Wheel of Fortune plays just like the television game show--Vanna included. Fans will oooh and aaah over the fantasy prizes and super jackpots, and will be instantly able to dive into the game and start spinning. Play in normal competition mode, solo mode, or tournament play in exotic locations ranging from New York City to a Dutch tulip field.

The game plays just as seen on TV: spin the wheel and pick letters to word puzzles, such as "same names," "fill in the blank," and "next line please." One to three players can play from one keyboard--don't worry if you can't find an opponent; the computer will take over to create a two- or even three-person game. You may even find the computer to be more challenging than your human opponents, but also a little luckier.

This game is appealing for those of us eager to "spin the wheel" at any given moment. The fantasy prizes successfully trigger your materialistic side--and since most come in his-and-her sets, the singles out there can imagine picking up two prizes for one. The background settings include decent animation, but the wheel could have used some more attention: its small size and tendency to stick when spinning reduces its appeal. Finally, while it's nice to have Vanna White as your virtual host, we couldn't help asking, "Where's Pat?" --Madeleine Miller

Pros:

  • Vanna's smiling face
  • Variable play time
  • Challenging computer opponents
Cons:
  • No Pat Sajak
  • Unrealistic wheel response
  • Gender-specific fantasy prizes

3.0 out of 5 stars Spin the Wheel!, December 2, 2001
This review is from: Wheel of Fortune (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
"Wheel of Fortune" is not a bad first effort. In fact, it's pretty impressive looking. The graphics are great, especially the ever-changing backdrops you get for each game you play. Sometimes you play in the desert, or you'll play in a casino. And having Vanna White as your hostess with the mostess isn't bad, either.

I do have some problems with this game, however. The first problem is the absence of Pat Sajak. Their chemistry is what makes the show click, and it is kind of missed here. Vanna White does great in this role all by herself, but her constant vigilance does get a little monotonous. The other problem with this game, a VERY annoying problem, are the computer players you have the option of challenging. Oh, man, do the creators of these games need to give these opponents more personality input. I don't know how many more times I can stand to hear one of my opponents groan when they go bankrupt or say things like, "I'll take an E . . . as in elocution!" Elocution?! Who do you know who uses that word?!

But these are the only detractors from the game. Despite being somewhat dim-witted personality wise, your computer opponents are pretty smart, and they will beat you if you aren't careful. And there are plenty of puzzles and categories to keep you hooked.

All in all, not a bad game. I like it, but I don't like the personality of the computer opponents. I haven't played the second edition of "Wheel of Fortune" so I can only pray that this was improved on.

3.0 out of 5 stars FUN GAME,COULD BE BETTER, October 14, 2001
This review is from: Wheel of Fortune (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
LOTS OF FUN PUZZLES,REALISTIC STUDIO AND SOUND EFFECTS,BUT WHERE'S PAT SAJAK AND THE BONUS ROUND? VANNA WHITE HOSTS THE WHOLE GAME INSTEAD. BASICALLY,ALL YOU CAN DO IS SOLVE PUZZLES,AND YOU GO ON THE LEADER BOARD,BUT WHAT? NO BONUS ROUND WHERE YOU CAN WIN A CAR OR $25,000? WELL,STILL A FUN GAME.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun little game, March 15, 2002

I rarely watch the TV show, but I consider the CD-ROM game "Wheel of Fortune" to be a fun program. It's easy to install and setup. The rules are easy enough, and the game itself is mentally challenging in a simple sort of way. The graphics are good, and you can turn off the background videos and sounds if you like. For $[money], this is a good bargain.
