This book provided detailed illustration and pictures on various forms...from mixing bowls, plates, handels, teapot, and even a soup cup with a matching saucer. He explains how to throw knob handles! He provides alternative methods in some cases and lists the tools needed for each project. There are also glaze recipes at the end of each project for the glaze exhibited on the piece. Excellent for beginners and advanced learners. I have been in pottery for 4 years and continue to find this book resourceful. Excellent buy and worth the money!

I teach pottery. Bill's book is an excellent how-to type book as well as a valuable teaching tool for beginning potters. I'm anxiously awaiting the next volume as well as a DVD set (hint hint) that extend Van Gilder's popular DIY network series on throwing clay. I highly recommend this book for all potters!

I had seen one episode of Bill van Gilder's show on DIY Network and walked away with at least 3 great ideas for improving my skills with clay. I bought this book and brought it to my pottery class and several other students and the teacher all went out to get their own copy. The projects give very clear instructions and photos, telling you exactly how much clay to use. There are useful techniques to learn with every project. There are even glaze recipes for the glazes used in the examples in the book.

This book gives so many tips for the beginning potter. The photographs are clear and close-up. I gleaned many tips from the author that I had not picked up in class. A tremendous help for any level pottery.

This is a great book to learn how to do pottery. Bill Van Gilder explains fully how to make the different pieces. The photography is great in helping to see how to do what Bill is explaining. The recipe for clear glaze is incorrect (the ingredients add up to 118%) There should not be dolomite in the recipe. Dolomite is for high fire glazes, not mid range. The recipe for red raspberry (beautiful color) should be 7% instead of 3.7 with a question mark. Poor editing of the recipes. Those are the two mistakes I've had to deal with so far.

great book lots of pictures, easy to follow, good basic practice for all potters....

This book is great. Not only do you get step by step help on making a project, but you also get fun ideas.

This book provided wonderful inspiration for wheel thrown pieces. When you want to create but are at a loss for a goal, this book will release your creative talents.

This book is excellent for a new potter. The project tutorials are very informative and written to be understood with ease. The accompanying pictures help illistrate every step of the way.

This book is wonderful for the beginner/intermediate potter. It has wonderful recipes. I made all of them and they are true to the colors and textures that were promised. I have hope now that my colors are good enough to market. All recipes are food safe, which is great. I would recommend this highly to any potter looking to advance in both throwing and glazing.
