Wheels Are Back On Track!,
By susumu-5 (Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wheels Are Turnin (Audio CD)
After their sappy pop junk effort in 1982, the band leader Kevin Cronin must have been depressed though the album made so-so success. But 1984 album turned out to be dramatic and solid one. Kevin participated Survivor's Caught In The Game album giving chorus part such as It Doesn't Have To Be This Way. Jim Peterik of Survivor is somewhat like master to Kevin. Survivor's 1983 album didn't become a hit but might have given troubled rock band leader new vigor.
Opening track I DO' WANNA KNOW is blasting and strong and yet catchy rock anthem proving that their rock spirit is still alive. ONE LONELY NIGHT is in contrast a ballad but guitar solo is still solid just like the ones in HI INFIDELITY. LIVE EVERY MOMENT is catchy and fun yet solid pop song. And one of my top favorite REO songs to date. ROCK'N ROLL STAR is another gem track. Then comes CAN'T FIGHT THIS FEELING somewhat KEEP ON LOVING and TAKE IT ON THE RUN combined and REO's signature ballad hit. WHEELS ARE TURNING makes me feel like being in their rock concert, brilliant ending. Verdict: REO's dramatic return to form. Rating: 93 out of 100 Recommended for: REO Speedwagon, Journey, and Survivor fans and wide range of 80s pop rock fans.

Classic rock epitomized,

Great songs. A great collection of hits. Two non-hits here also are absolute classics: "Through the Window" and "Rock 'N' Roll Star" (incredible solo/guitar work). The background vocals are so rich and smooth...nobody has ever done it better. Overall, a great rock band on top of their game. They don't make music like this anymore.

SPEEDWAGON'S best album,

REO SPEEDWAGON is known for some of rocks best hit songs, such as RIDIN' THE STORM OUT, TIME FOR ME TO FLY and KEEP ON LOVIN' YOU. However, throughout their run of 1970's and 1980's hits they never put out an album that kept my attention all of the way through. To my ears (and I am admittedly not a tremendous fan REO SPEEDWAGON fan), even HI INFIDELITY had some glaring holes within its cuts. WHEELS ARE TURNIN' might have a song that is less than stellar, and certainly the band's growing penchant for pop songs flourished throughout, this album still had some remarkable songs such as THROUGH THE WINDOW, ROCK AND ROLL STAR, LIVE EVERY MOMENT and I DON'T WANNA KNOW... but to me... the true gem of this album (and one of the all time best SPEEDWAGON songs is... (Alan Gratzer drum roll please...) the title track WHEELS ARE TURNIN'!!! This song ranks right up there with my all time favorite RIDIN' THE STORM OUT (live version from A DECADE OF ROCK AND ROLL). I wish a 20th Anniversary re-release of this album would have followed those of YOU CAN TUNE A PIANO... and HI INFIDELITY. More so, I wish the band would have performed the incredible track during any one of the four REO SPEEDWAGON concerts that I have attended.
Please release a remastered version of this incredibly successful album... PLEASE.

Wheels are Turnin was Reo's most popular album to follow Hi Infidelity. Reo struck it big again with another huge power ballad Can't fight this feeling(still gets played at high school dances). Not some of Reo's best writing, but I dowanna know, and one lonely night are also highlights. If you're a big fan check out the Wheels are Turnin' concert video.

I donot understan how anybody can down rate an album so great. It's one of the best REO has done ans was surprised at the low star pointage rate on the album. Can't wait to hear more from the band. always a fan. Princess

REO at it's best,
By Sal April (Wilmington, Delaware) - See all my reviews

I really think "Wheels Are Turnin" IS REO at it's best. Having worked at a pop radio station as music director and DJ in the '80's when this was released, I remember actually starting "Can't Fight This Feeling" on our station THE DAY we received it. Others in the area followed suit. My favorite on the album by far is "I Do Wanna Know" which was the FIRST single released. I too loved the video to this one. All in all this collection shows REO as rockers, pop giants and balladeers all in one. Gary Richrath has got to be one of the most UNDERRATED guitarists ever. Even if you're a part-time fan of REO, you'll love this one. By the way, my love of REO goes gack to 1976 when I saw them open for BTO, (which I call the "alphabet tour".)

The best group ever!,

For ones that really like music, REO Speedwagon is one in a lifetime rock'n roll band who build a special legacy. I track all the albums since HI-Infidelity and it's a great collection. They never reach to #1 because they have great competence in Journey, Boston, Chicago and Mr. Michael Jackson. It's my favorite band and nothing will change that.

Good Album but not a rocker like earlier efforts,

I Bought this album after seeing the hilarious video for "I don't wanna Know." That is still my favorite song on the album and while it isn't a seminal work from REO, it is full of radio friendly rock and ballads. I still listen to it on occasion.
